This is getting too annoying. A dwarf wants to plant some seeds, takes the whole barrel with him and nobody can plant at the same time. A dwarf catches a fish and another one grabs the fish barrel and hauls it to him and the dissector can't clean the fish.

And I keep getting these error messages and it's seriously killing me inside...

Can somebody please help me? Any advice?

Set up a more adavnced hauling system.

For example

Fisherdwarves catch fish at river,
Hauler hauls fish to a stockpile near the river
fish are loaded from the river pile into a cart
fish are carted to a stockpile near a fishery
fish are prepared
fish are hauled to a prepared food sockpile near fishery
perpared food is carted to dining room

I can do this without the cart right? Because this is my old fort and I hadn't planned on adding carts when I built it.

ya you could do it without carts... less efficient but still workable

the point is to not have your fishery taking from the same stockpile that your fisherdwarves are giving to as haulers will keep taking the barrels...

EDIT: Also iirc carts do not need track if guided... and still allow you to haul more stuff at once

the point is to not have your fishery taking from the same stockpile that your fisherdwarves are giving to as haulers will keep taking the barrels...

For the seeds: a separate (small) stockpile for the seeds of each plants you grow, and only one farm for each plant (no matter how big). AFAIK only one farmer will plant seeds in any given farm at the same time, correct me if I'm wrong.

As recently as 34.07, multiple planters could plant seeds in the same plot at the same time.

It would, but poorly. I would need to make a stockpile for seeds that is at least 500 squares.

I've been slowly changing my stockpile designs. It's actually kinda good for me; I had always built my forts with this sort of hauling in mind and meticulously set the types for each every time I set them. Now I just have to build the transportation routes and set some new settings to make it work better than it was before :D

I was going to whine about how it takes too much effort to get your dorfs to work more efficiently by playing with stockpile options and the like. Then I realized I already do custom stockpiles all around the place anyway, so I suppose that's alright.

I still hate it when I forget to turn off sand bags on some of those though.

Toady should probably change the whole "grab entire bin/barrel" thing for when a dorf only wants to use a single object inside it. Also planters should just grab the bag of seeds anyway.
Perhaps dwarves should have personal containers for small objects like socks/etc which they stuff with every object they're going to carry to a place into.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

This actually killed the best fort I could have had with the newer builds because the grower could almost never plant anything since the barrel was always gone.  here's a new need for ya though

These dwarves are some weird sons of Armok... They can create atom smashers and quantum dump sites but can't even take a single seed from a barrel.

Makes you think...
