your kidding right? since i started playing it was by my understanding in order to get the new features you had to reinstall the game and what ever mods or programs you had with it so it can be up to date

You understood wrong.

You need to gen a new world to get some parts of the update.  Although you can use stuff like minecarts in your old world.
