What is the most valuable thing I can make out of steel, per bar? (Assuming ordinary, not exceptional or anything). Is this the same for all the other metals? If not, what is it for silver and gold?

Mechanisms, as I recall.

For gold... I forget what's the most valuable. I just make it all into whatever furniture I happen to need. Silver goes to bolts.

for me, silver goes to warhammers, gold I've never used but i'd go for statue/furniture, other metals go to stockpiles never to be used, unless it is Iron, then I make edgeweapons, because I can't bring myself to go for steel

Aren't serrated disks worth more than mechanisms? You'd need to train a weaponsmith anyway.

Mail shirt is allegedly more valuable than breastplate, with greaves/leggings worth more and shields worth the most, but I'm not sure that this squares with my experience.

Your question was "per bar".  Breastplates take 3 bars to make.  Now, I dunno the value of stuff, but as long as a breastplate is worth 3x as much as anything that takes 1 bar to make, then you're fine.

Breast plates are only value 15, which is pretty low, considering they take 3 bars - Goblets and Flasks are far better, taking a single bar and producing three items of value 10.
Battle axes are even better at 34 for one bar, but spiked balls and large serrated discs win hands down with a value of 126 for only one bar.

Based on the vast difference in value it sounds like a bug where either more bars should be used or the price should be reduced.
