What do I need for the perfect worldgen?

This is unmodded DF.

While waiting for the new version, I thought I'd go ahead and tinker about with worldgen a bit, so that when the new version is released I'll have a great world ready to go. I've sort of been out of DF for a while, and I'm not sure what kind of stuff I have to keep in mind before making a world.

I remember I used to increase the z-levels between the lowest cavern and the bottom of everything, to try and force taller spires of a valuable blue material.

I've never really done any editing of raws; is that still necessary to keep kobolds from dying off in worldgen? I'd prefer to have kobolds and megabeasts and such.

What are some of the things you folks do to get ideal world parameters?

Two ways to save my little army of thieves.

1.Add [PET_DOMESTIC] or whatever the tag is, you will be able to bring them as pets.


2. [NO_DRINK] [NO_EAT]
