Would pay to watch Tarn or Zach play
« on: May 12, 2012, 07:32:06 am »

See title. I would gladly donate generously if either of them streamed a session of Fortress mode. I'm very interested in seeing how they approach the game. I'm sure I'm not alone...

You don't have to pay for anything... I'm simply stating that one of the streaming a play session could potentially generate a lot of donations.

It's always different watching the builders play their game.  I know in NWN PWs the players liked to play with the builders.  The problem for the builders was that they/we (depending on the world in question) were always in debug mode, as Tarn said he is when he plays DF.  It kind of ruined the immersion for the builders.  The players did get a kick out of it, though.  Builders always knew where the traps were and where the best loot was, because they put it all there.   :P

Watch the creator of a game doing some gameplay with commentaries is interesting (for me at least, no matter the game).
Not sure if it would attract more players though. Most people just get scared by the wave of ASCII characters.

But DF seems so random, how could it ruin the immersion? He just need to play in a terrifying area and survive for a year or two (without actively look for bugs).

Toady posted a number of videos of the game back when it was in preproduction in order to raise interest.

mind you, that was about 10 years ago

When you are the creator, you never stop looking for bugs, or at least noticing areas that could use improvement.  I actually didn't mind it, but my co-builder refused to play after the first couple of times.  He said he didn't want to have to think about what needed fixing while he was playing, and he couldn't stop thinking about it because it was his responsibility.  I feel a creator can't possibly know what the game needs without playing it, even if it isn't as fun as it is for those who can't mentally see the machinery behind the curtain, so I continued to play it.  I enjoyed it, too, even if I did take notes the whole while.  It was almost more fun, because I knew I could change something if I didn't like how it was working.   :)

In light of the most recent blog post, it seems they both are still very capable of having fun with the game.

Personally if they ever do make a small series of videos or start a live stream or something, I'd totally watch every minute of it.

It would be awesome watching them terrorize aardvarks in the arena with debug minecarts.

The aardwolves should count their blessings, heh.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Don't say heh. Toady copyrighted that one.

Toady uploaded some movies debug-playing the old 2D version here. It's very interesting.

If you want to pay Toady, donations go here.
