Im going to try to tame two elephants
« on: May 12, 2012, 05:34:20 pm »

So on one of my fortresses, I had just finised walling in the entire area, when a elephant got in. I recruted my miners(six of my original seven plus two more) and had them attack the elephant. It killed five of them and started a tantrum spiral that just settled. It was given the name Logemösir Rulbecor and was chased onto the top of the wall, and I destroyed the stairs up, stranding it. I decide to see if it would die of hunger or its injuries and left it alone for about three months. I check up on it and , suprize, she had two calves, one male, the other female. I then decided to tame the two calves. Now to see if it will work.

It should; the calves shouldn't be enemies of your civilization or group, so they won't try to kill your people. Note, though, that tame elephants starve to death and there's nothing you can do to stop them.

They need to eat 1 unit of grass every 12 steps to stave off starvation. It takes an action for them to eat and one for them to move, and they get to take an action every 11 steps. Even if they're on an area of maximum-density grass, they'll eat the grass to nothing then move to another tile over 44 steps, but they'll have eaten only 3 times during that period, so even in the ideal case they're 8 steps behind on their eating. Over enough time, that discrepancy between how much they need to eat and how much they can eat inevitably kills them.

Their grazing can easily be modded to fix that issue. You won't need a regen for that kind of edit in the raws, although you will have to edit the ones in the relevant save directory.

I don't consider this cheating because elephants don't die in real life because they can't stuff their faces fast enough. Same goes for rhinos.

Bear in mind that elephants grow REALLY slowly. f raising for meat, you might as well butcher them on the spot. If for warbeasts, then...um..don't.

if you're modding, you might as well make them grow up a year earlier. War elephants that don't graze and grow up faster can be a very effective fighting force. Call your dwarf that they are assigned to "hannibal"
