I actually really like this idea, but the only problem is where would the funeral take place and what conditions exactly have to be met to have a funeral? Obviously you would need a dwarf who died, but what else would make the funeral trigger?

I'd imagine that a funeral can only trigger if a zone is designated for funerals (using a zone designation would count chairs in the designation for example), if a dwarf had the job enabled for funerals (I'm not sure at this time what the job would be called), and if one of the following conditions are met:

A) The dwarf who died has at least 5+ family members and/or close friends.
B) If more than five dwarfs died in a siege (this funeral would then trigger a time after the siege) (attendants would be random and/or relatives and/or close friends of the deceased)
C) The dwarf who died was a hero or renounced for something (ex. killing a megabeast) (would bring the most dwarfs in for mourning)
Optional D) The dwarf was a significant Noble (aka 'Attend Party')

Additionally, funerals could be held without the body in-case it cannot be retrieved.

I think the benefit of having funerals would be is that they would add more depth to a game, and it could have a little room for more fun, like for example bad timing.
I'm not sure about the requirements. I think that a funeral's requirements should be roughly analogous to a wedding's, only with a dead guy instead of a happy couple.

So, a slabbing ceremony that ends with the name being engraved on the slab?

Or a memorial service.

Yeah, I don't think UristMcHonored the Superhero of the Fort will be put in some stone tomb and completely forgotten except for the occasional statue or engraving.  For the next week or month or something after the death, people would gather around the tomb randomly and would get a happy thought from being able to honor their fallen comrade/family/lover.

Your fort is being flooded, there's a steel titan rampaging through the fort, half you dwarves are at a wedding, and the other half are at a memorial service. Sounds like Fun to me.

I think that dwarves are the kind of creature that mourns death with a barrel of alcohol.
As for me, they will only mourn the death of a barrel of alcohol.

"So, Urist, I heard you got married a few months ago. How was it?"
"Horrible. I didn't even get to kiss the bride."
"Why not?"
"People from the memorial services down the hall trampled her."
"What?"
"They were fleeing from a giant steel theropod with four arms."
"..."
"Its dust didn't help her health, either."
