Is there a smelter reaction to make free coal?
I embarked in a area without trees, and i don't feel like making long mineshafts. Is there a way?

You just change some reaction that you don't intend to ever use, to make coal from nothing.  The modding forum has many examples.

Do you mean a modded reaction?  There should be plenty, and it would be easy to make anyways.  Just don't forget to add it to the entity file so dwarves can use it.  Of course, this would involve generating a new world, so your tree problem would go away.

If you don't feel like cheating in a very cheaty way (though it doesn't seem to trouble you) just dig a large room in muddied stone or soil and breach the caverns.

EDIT: oh right, I guess you could get around the whole new world thing.

I tried snorting coke once... the carbonated bubbles made me have a sneeze attack. I don't understand why people want to use it that way at all! Its so much better to simply drink it.
