I just setup my army and one of the soldiers was elected mayor. Will he still train and participate in such activities? Will he fight when the squad is ordered to kill a unit?

Or will he just ignore the orders?

I would think it rather cool if the mayor was an ass kicker, but I don't see him training with the others.

Yep. Mayors will still work like any other dwarf. My mayor was a legendary speardwarf and he fended off an entire siege with the help of a legendary axedorf. Mayors are badass.

becomming mayor is now more a matter of social skills, vampires migrate not knowing anyone in the fort but are usually soon after elected as mayor, for example. Strangely enough, all my recent mayors were very skilled intimidators. So your mayor may actually have no friends whatsoever and the tantrum spiral will never see the light.

So basically you have a fort run by the Vetinari family? :P

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

no need to link vetinari for a discworld fan  :P

I wrote this somewhere else too, but there are three dwarves who have been mayors, though one only once, all three with 9+ in intimidation by now, but the two who were passing the office around were also good at two other socials. One persuader/comedian, the other flatterer/pacifier (iirc). Currently, the persuader has been holding office for 9 years in a row

I hate it when one of my military dwarves gets elected mayor, because it means no meetings will happen unless I pull him out of the squad altogether.

I once had a vampir that i had locked up become a mayor, his only relationship was a deity and a short term aquaintance.
