About books.
« on: April 23, 2012, 12:11:37 am »

I have a few books lying at the entrance of my embark and they won't move, I tried every stockpile, every way of getting rid of it, it is burn proof and I can't dump it.

That's odd, I'm sure I saw books in one of the selections in the stockpile menus, the 'finished goods' list I think.

There's safe. Then there's unsafe. And then there's the average dwarf fort, which remains unrated because the OSHA inspector flatly refused to go anywhere within a dozen miles of the place.

Either they're forbidden and you missed it, or it's a bug.

As far as I can tell, the same thing you do with toys and musical instruments. You know, sell 'em, smash 'em, magma, whatever takes your fancy.

I've not experienced this firsthand, but from what I've heard they're brought along by necromancers who proceed to ditch them immediately, presumably on some kind of grotesque leafletting campaign. The reason they're everythingproof is that they're artifacts. As for what to do with them....well pretty much nothing, they don't seem to interact with anything at all. By all means hide or atomsmash them or whatever else you feel appropriate.

Well either way, wtf do i do with books?

Books are made by necromancers during the worldgen stuff, and some of htem will give your adventurer mode character the ability to animate the dead.

They currently do diddly squat in Fortress mode though. There's no reaction in the game that makes books and no reaction in the game that uses books (so you can't stud them with gemstones and sell them onto the next caravan that arrives). And there's not even a way to make dwarves read books in Fortress mode, so you can't train up your own army of tame necromancers.

In one fortress my Dwarves finally moved a necromancer's book into a Finished Goods stockpile that had never had any setting changed except the quality settings (to make it artifacts only), but in the next fortress I lost two books to thieves because I could not get the Dwarves to move them.  In all three cases the book was dropped by a stealthed necromancer who failed to notice the traps just inside the entrance to the fortress.
