Humble Botanicula Bundle
« on: April 19, 2012, 05:35:56 pm »

New humble bundle out. It seems to be ruffling some feathers. People are complaining about the recycled games and the fact steam keys are now a minimum of 5 dollars.
This is going to be the first Humble I skip if nothing else gets added, the games aren't all that impressive and I don't currently have enough money to start saving trees  :-[.

you can play samorost 2 online for free, without it being illegal.

Hm, where?  I had believed that original Samarost was free-to-play, but not 2.

Anyway, I already have Machinarium (twice!), I'm cold on Samarost 2 for some reason, and Kooky isn't even a game as far as I can tell.

But I'm excited about Botanicula, and Windowsill looks like a delightful mindless timewaster.  So I'm torn.

Currently this Bundle is at $8.66 average, and Botanicula itself was supposed to debut at $10.  I might do this.

Kooky is a feature length movie. It seems like the indie bundles are all moving away from just selling games alone.

Pass. Nothing I want, and I already have Machinarium. I know there's gotta be some other indie games out there worth bundling  :-\

Yea I was sort of surprised at it, I know whether or not somebody will like a game is about opinion, I also see some value in eventually putting some indie games up again (after all not everybody was there for earlier bundles) but this one seemed pretty fast (wasn't Machinarium up there like at Christmas? Like just a few months ago?).

Ultimately I agree with others, the games feel 'blah' to me, I already have one of them, and while I understand that the bundle prices will go up over time and eight bucks for five games is still a steal, I still need to want the games.

This might be a fine point, but this actually the Humble Botanica Debut, not bundle. Though, it'd probably be better off called the Amanita Bundle, since the main three and movie are related, with only the bonus being done by somebody else.

Somebody else said elsewhere that the 5$ minimum for Steam is a direct result of pressure on them (probably as a result of the Christmas bundle fiasco...)

What happened with the Christmas bundle?

It coincided with a Steam event; courtesy of Wikipedia:

"The Humble Indie Bundle 4 overlapped with a large holiday sale on the Steam software service, which offered numerous prizes by completing some achievements associated with the offered games in Steam, including entries into a raffle to win every game on the Steam service. During this overlap, Wolfire found that some users were abusing the system, paying the minimum amount ($0.01) for the Bundle, registering new Steam accounts, and using the newly purchased games to improve their chances for the Steam raffle. Wolfire considered this "unfair to legitimate entrants" in the Steam contest, and to stop it, the company altered the sale so that only those that paid more than $1.00 would receive Steam keys for the games."

I thought people were complaining about Botanicula being instantly available for pay-what-you-want including some more stuff, especially over the average, while people who pre-ordered it spent more for less.

Nothing impressive and already own something, so might just donate to charity.

I'm worried that the concept of supporting indie devs with pay-what-you-want donations may have jumped the shark at this point.

At this point, I won't be surprised if Wolfire releases another damaging spur of the moment rant to the press over the bundle reception (much like they did with their Pangea Software rant where they publicly cut down a wonderful indie developer in a fit of rage).

I'm wondering about that too; looking around online, the only suggestion of animosity between them appears to be from a forum post: 'Personally I would try and avoid anything that has anything to do with Pangea, for various reasons that I will not go into right now.'

If I didn't already have the majority of my collection of games on Steam, I know where I would be heading.
