plump helmets look like PURPLE MUSHROOMS that are pointy at the top, like a spade shape.
pig tails are curly grey tendrils, like roots that grow up out of the ground instead of down into it.
cave wheat has stalks like above ground wheat, but its spikelets are larger and bulbous, with a fleshy texture.
Sweet pods look like rutabegas or turnips, but they're bright red and saturated with juice that can be processed to either rum or syrup.
Dimple cups look like a flaky, grainy blue puffball, but with a crease down the middle of their rounded structure.
Quarry bushes are small shrubs with gray leaves.

crundles look like THIS

though I'm uncertain about their size, because one time I saw a kitten pick one up by its throat and thrash it around.

I can't imagine elves as anybody but shortish Scouse accented blondies since somebody said it once.

I too imagine bronze colossi as talos.

On the subject of Kobolds. I really don't think they look like dogs. I imagine them as the little devils they were in Germanic mythology. Really just a lot like what most people think of elves (the link kind, not Scouser kind), but even smaller and angry looking.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Plump helmet men I imagine as lanky, tall purple myconid with a jolly expression and tons of laughter (makes 'em more fun to eat)

Tubers I imagine as tubes that are bloated and dark purple.
Rope reed I imagine as a lot of whip-like soft inter twirling vines
Quarry bush look just like bushes that grow on the side of the rocks up in norht ontario, hard and hardy and tough.
Sweet pods I think of as figs that grow in the dirt, maybe a bit like sugar beets.
Longland grass I think of as large wide-blade grass that can be dried and milled.

I always imagine kobolds as looking like they do in Armok 1/Kobold Quest.

...

I always thought of lump helmets as being phallic shaped; 'Purple Helmet', etc.

Actually, for the longest time I've visualized Kobolds as Asura from Guild Wars.

what with goblins, I went a more traditional route. I use a magic card I used to have. As I said... quite mainstream.

Long Land Grass=Wheat
Kobolds=
In terms of height dwarf<goblin=elf=human. IIRC the game describes Gobbos,Elfs, and Humies as medium.
Rutherers look like the first medieval boss from Chrono Triggers
Microline and the blue stuff glows for some reason.

I think Rope reed is some kind of papyrus-like plant. Plump helmets in my mind look something like the Mycon of Star Control II (and Footkerchief's avatar) or maybe the purple bowl-shaped alien "plants" from X-COM UFO Defence. Bronze colossi are huge statues in Greek battle gear (I think that image comes from the historical Colossus of Rhodes). On the issue of Kobolds / cuteboids, I tend to imagine the kind of dog/lizard/humanoid thing as seen in Baldur's Gate. Roasts... I think meat loaf is pretty close to what they look like, at least if you made a meat loaf out of yak spleen, flour and strawberries. If you mince and bake just about anything, it will at least look sort of edible as opposed to revolting (e.g. eyes or tripe).

The visual puns on statues and engravings in Ungrashzon got a good laugh out of me.

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

Instead of speaking strictly about appearances, I think it's fun to figure out what the plants are supposed to be like since description on them is pretty close to nil other than the name. As in: "Exactly what the hell IS a Rope Reed, anyway?" Strawberries are the only thing that's really familiar; even Plump Helmets which are the easiest to figure out are pretty alien.

We literally had a thread devoted to finding out what pig-tails and the like looked like

Bronze Colossus: a giant Greek or Roman style bronze statue come to life and bent on destruction. basically like the first boss in God of War II.

Longland grass: wheat
Pig-tails: Cat tails.
Rope read: Hemp.
Sunberries: Raspberries

and I wonder if in DF Strawberries are literally Berries that look like drinking straws... O.o

Aw, really? I'm gonna have to ask you to link me to that - despite being one with Google, I couldn't manage a pertinent Bay 12 search with a gun to my head.  :-[

Plump helmets look like purple greek helmets
Kobolds look like how they do in dungeon crawl stone soup
goblins are burly green people
blind cave dragons have their skin peeling off of them in stringy bits similar to Gergoth from Castlevania.
