The dusts/fire/fireballs are silenced by a good amount if you double-layer the fortifications iirc. (Or weave walls into the fortifications)

You would need legendary or otherwise close to legendary marksdwarves to shoot through multi-tile thick fortifications though right?  Something I've been meaning to try but haven't gotten around to yet.

The trick to engaging flaming FBs on equal footing is legendary marksdwarves with shields. They'll block the fire and probably kill it before it gets close. Fire breath will also NOT move up z-levels, although it does go through fortifications. Fireballs will move up z-levels but are blocked by fortifications.

The toughest beast I've seen recently was an ice humanoid with webs that got into my crypts. Fire's bad, but at least all you need to counter it is shields. Webs though... webs are the worst. Swordsdwarves had to fight it one by one while webbed. Bolts could chip it but couldn't kill it. I considered walling it in but I'd be sealing it in there with a whole field of occupied coffins and more than a few militia who wouldn't retreat.

A recruit eventually cut it in half with an +iron short sword+ and got a title, along with a nice room. Whew.

Never had a bat massacre people with an axe before.
EDIT2: Oh god, the bat has got a title now.

I'm not amazed you got lots of FBs - all you need to do that is keep making gold crafts. I am surprised you haven't gotten something immune to arrows or that sprays contagious deadly blood everywhere when hurt.

I generally trap them underground, use spikes and bolts, then sanitize the corpse with magma. Paranoia about any kind of syndrome pays off.

Good plan.  I just had a nice fort decimated by some horrible forgotten beast fluid that caused everything it touched to rot.  And this was in 34.05, so most of my dwarves were naked.

Prior to the beast issue, my main killer was actually a completely trapped vampire.  A very very popular trapped vampire.  Who liked crowns.  And I had 3,000 crowns I was trying to get rid of.  My trapped vampire would snag mayor after the trades had happened, and before I could replace him, he'd put an export ban on crowns, and then marked 30 dwarves for punishment (most of them beatings since my prison only holds 6).  Tempting to just kill him... but it seemed more dwarfy to let him live.

That sounds much. In my current fortress I had two forgotten beasts (thoses things made of glass and spewing web everywhere) and I am in year 17. Or do dragons, rocs, minotaurs and werecreatures count? I tamed and bred the rocs, tamed the dragon and chained him in the throne room (instill some fear in the diplomats, I think) and the minotaur is waiting in his cage until I decide what to do with him. Perhaps he should fight to the death with one of my precious birds in the arena.

lots of hauling taking place

"look at it this way, none of the masterworks were harmed, right? the bridge just accidentally came down and crushed those crowns. We got it up again, would you like to inspect the site?"

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.
