When a dwarf likes an animal they'll adopt it as a pet if it's available. When a dwarf likes cats cats will adopt them.

I have smooshed over 100 cats of various sizes.

I will leave the scary catdwarf a single male kitten.

I think I am doing well in avoiding his mind shattering so far.

This is why I love DF

In any case, cage up kittens the moment they're born. You don't even need to bother butchering them, they'll die of old age in the cage. Less labor intensive
