Just to let you know, I am hanging out in the backdrop.

That's cool, save where?

I got fed up with my fortress, so I decided to kill everyone (abandon is for elves) with a cave-in.

OK, cave-ins were always pretty deadly, but with the new falling object damage they are downright brutal.  As far as I can make out from the logs, many people were killed by the flying bodies of other victims.  One baby's corpse ricocheted off three other people, two walls and the floor.

Just finished up my turn. Working on compiling post and uploading save.

EDIT: Save uploaded. Movie should be PMing you instructions on getting it.

EDIT2: Well, that was a fail. Apparently I uploaded the original version instead of my turn's. Should be able to fix it tomorrow.

I was going to say "fail spectacularly", but you guys seem to be doing a great job of that already.

14th Obsidian, 252

Woke up this morning to find that I have been "selected" to be the new Overseer of some random fortress I've never heard of before. Apparently the choice was made two nights ago, after I quote "mandated my foot up the Mayor's ass", following a demand for shale toy boats. I do not recall doing that... then again, I don't recall much about that night at all.

Related: I am never drinking Sewer Brew again.

1st Granite, 253

Well, I'm finally here, in the middle of a massive deforestation effort. Already things are looking up.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Or, at least they were until I entered the fortress proper. A note left by the previous overseer informed me of the lack of bags to hold seeds, crippling the farm's output. It also had a warning about "vam", but the rest was too smeared with blood to read.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, though.

Other initial worries include trade goods strewn about, cluttering up both the stockpiles and the workshops, and the downright fetishistic overabundance of doors.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well, two of those problems should be easy to solve, anyway. Time to get to work.

4th Granite, 253

A goblin kidnapper showed up, but was scared off by a wood hauler. Lo, truly the savage goblins are fearsome foes! Oh, woe is us for existing in a world that houses their dark and terrible kind!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Related: I think I've found a use for all those kittens we have here.

11th Granite, 253

After noticing that the workshops I've ordered weren't getting built, I found a few "volunteers" for a "special task force". Loyal And Brash, Overly-Retrained Engineering Royal Services, also known as "Laborers". They do everything except mine, hunt, cut trees, and fish. Hopefully I can get the cloth-working shops set up soon with their help.

13th Granite, 253

Tragedy has struck! We truly are vanquished, as yet another goblin has decided to ra- Eh? Scared off by another wood hauler before the military could mobilize? Shock and alarm.

On a more positive note, the workshops have been built, and bags are being made for the seeds.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

23rd Granite, 253

Seeds are all packed up, and most of the trade goods have been binned.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just in time for yet another goblin to realize that there are things living here and get spooked.

In case this luck doesn't last, though, I've given the order to set up a hospital, compete with indoor well.

3rd Slate, 253

Noticed that the miners weren't working nearly as quickly as they should be. Told them to stop hauling things around and get to work.

One of them then pointed out that we had only two picks between four miners, apparently in some sort of mandated sharing and cooperation exercise. Ordered another pick to be forged.

Note to self: See if previous overseer instituted any other dangerously elf-like policies.

5th Slate, 253

Our lookouts reported that "meow meow mew meow purr".

... Should probably stop using cats as guards.

Anyway, we've received a migrant wave. 29 of them marched on in, making me suddenly realize how inadequate our current bedrooms are.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The order was given to carve out many rooms, as well as filling the dormitory with beds.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

17th Slate, 253

Oooohhhh. "Vam"-pire. We have a vampire on the loose. Wow, now I just feel like an idiot.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

12th Felsite, 253

Huh. One of the stonecrafters has barricaded himself in his shop. Witnesses say he started to draw a picture of a rock, but soon realized he already had one.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hopefully we'll get something usef-
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

20th Felsite, 253

Ahh, the elven trade caravan. As much as we tend to not get along, I must admit that the elves do bring many valuable goods. Lumber, always a necessity. Cloth, which can be useful. Exotic animals and boozes are probably some of the most popular. But there is one thing that they provide that is more valuable than all the rest put together.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Free target practice for the militia. Offing one of those pointy-eared hippies with swords made of their precious trees is the very definition of poetic justice.

Butchering their beasts of burden for food is also helpful. Especially as our meat stocks are running dangerously low...

13thHematite, 253

It's not ideal, but the farms are producing enough food that there's enough to be eaten and brewed. Once those kittens grow up, though...

3rd Malachite, 253

12 more migrants showed up. Hopefully our tallow stocks will be able to be used for soap, and we won't have to eat them just yet...

1st Galena, 253

Farms are doing so well, I've given the order to build a second still to chip away at our large plant stockpile.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also ordered the Farmer's Workshop there to see what sort of edibles it can create. This may help solve our food-related woes.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

7th Galena, 253

The dwarves have elected a mayor! He immediately mandated large gems. This... is going to be Fun.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

8th Galena, 253

... Oh yeah, forgot we had that little vampire problem. Crap.

15th Galena, 253

The human caravans have arrived!

Three bins of useless crap exchanged for all of their metal, booze, and food. ≡Llama Cheese Roast≡s for everybody!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

20th Galena, 253

And now one of our farmers is running around, babbling something about being host to a restless spirit.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1st Limestone, 253

Apparently the lingering regret of the restless spirit was simply that he had really wanted to make an earring before he died.

To be fair, though, it is a fairly snazzy earring.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

14th Sandstone, 253

The dwarven caravan has arrived! This time, we needed to give them five bins of crap, though we also got some steel weapons and gypsum powder in addition to all of their food, booze, metal, and some spare cloth and thread.

23rd Sandstone, 253

Finally, our soap-making operations are underway. With crutches, splints, plaster, bandages, sutures, and now soap, our hospital is fully-stocked.

... Unless someone breaks a leg. I'll have to get some traction benches made.

Speaking of breaking legs, another ten migrants made it without incident.

15th Timber, 253

What is it about this vampire that always makes me forget about it until it strikes again!? Well, no more of that. I've appointed a Captain of the Guard, as well as a Hammerer. That should solve this issue nicely.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

3rd Opal, 253

So, apparently the cook had been framed for something last year, and the Hammerer was eager to deal with it. Oh well, I can blame the death on the vampire.

27th Opal, 253

Finally, I managed to get the vampire arrested for his crimes. He's locked in a cell near the coffins. With the door locked, we should be safe from this one.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

15th Obsidian, 253

My year is almost up. I must say, this fortress has had no shortage of interesting challenges. Hopefully the next overseer won't run into anything too nasty.

Our stocks are looking good, in general.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We've got quite a few bars of soap stocked up, and lots of spare wood to be burned.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Food-wise, the caravans were very nice to us.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also: gypsum plaster for the hospital.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And finally, some of our "uninvited guests" got themselves caught in the cage traps that a previous overseer had set up. Should be good for some military training.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This looks quite interesting; would I be able to request a turn please, or am I too late?

Interesting turn, Edward-Tohr. It was much different from the turn I didn't complete (stupid cyclops).
