Hhmm, maybe I have made a noob assumption. I dug until "shift >" no longer works. Is there a way to go deeper?

I did some reading on the wiki and it looks like I only have metamorphic layers all the way down to where what I'm callin the "bottom."
Does the z-level indicator stop changing or are you assuming that because it all looks the same it's the same level?

*is confused*

1.ALL. HUMANS. MUST. DIE.

2.ALL. ELVES. MUST. BE. TORTURED.

3.DIG THE SHINY BLUE ROCK........

4.ENJOY THE ENSUING CARNAGE

you need to mod in elf diplomat, but the human one is always available. They tend to be less of a threath than goblins though, but it's so much fun if they arrive at the same time. Also, humans have the annoying tendency to actually siege, preventing caravans from reaching you without wasting lives.

Humans tend to ride horses and have metal armor too.

Humans are damn smart.
Best idea is to be friends with humans and enemys with everything else.

Guys, tinypirate's guide uses 40d. There are no randomly generated clowns or candy pillars there.

First fortress in DF2012 wiped out by undead siege. It was pathetic as I could not figure out how to keep my functionally retarded dwarfs in the fortress.

40d had a setting to prevent this but I can't not find anything similar in this version. Can any one share a link to the wiki or a forum posts that explains this?

I'm on my very first fortress and am bored. Food & booze are self sustaining, elite marksdwarves are slaughtering goblin sieges and my dwarves are generally happy.

I read all of TinyPirate's noob tutorials, and honestly I think they were too good as I have not died yet. I can't seem to create enough wealth to get the big nasties to start knocking in my gates.

My question to the community; what shall I do to increase the FUN enough to result in a good learning experience?

I am considering attacking friendly caravans for more sieges or instigating a tantrum spiral.

Embark on an evil biome next time. I died in my first year after a long, agonizing battle against the undead.

I want to tell you they were bad men, cephalo.  I want to tell you that with a better overseer the Fortress never would've gotten so bad someone would get offed in a pointless fisticuffs.
But the sad truth charlie?
It was inevitable.

What you're looking for is the burrows system. Here's a step-by-step guide:
1. Open the burro[w] screen and creta a new burrow.
2. Designate the inside of your fortress as part of the burrow.
3. Go to the [m]ilitary [a]lerts screen and create a new alert.
4. Assign the burrow to that alert.

When you want your dwarves to go inside, activate that alert.

Well, that worked.

Now, if I could only get my marksdwarves to resupply their quivers instead of running directly at the goblin maceman...

Marksdwarves are a bit stupid, when they run out of ammo during a fight they will run at the enemy and start using their crossbows as clubs. To avoid that let them shoot from above (i.e. from a plateau where you removed the ramps so they won't run down) or through fortifications.
