I have a bunch of questions.
« on: April 11, 2012, 12:48:17 pm »

1. My legendary archer/marksdwarf has become atached to a no quality steel crossbow( back then i didn't know that material only affect melee damage) if i make the dwarf use another crossbow will the dwarf go insane or just happiness if its happiness how much it is? should i take it off now ASAP or wait for some caged victim to execute to show up so the dwarf can get some happiness to counterest it?

2.Is there a way to check if a dwarf is pregnant?Or to make it stop hauling its baby around?I dont want any of them getting perforated in the danger room

3. Can i make dwarves sterile whitout killing his husband/wife?

4. Can dwarves become atached to armor?

1. A dwarf who is attached to a weapon simply won't automatically upgrade to a different one if another one that fits their uniform criteria that is more expensive becomes available. No happiness change occurs as a result of attachment. Normally, if a dwarf was using a no-quality steel weapon and a higher-quality steel weapon was made, they'd drop the no-quality one and pick up the higher-quality one because it's more valuable. If you force the dwarf to drop it, for instance by swapping their uniform around, they usually won't pick up the same weapon again unless it's the only one available anyway. Do note that attachment seems to be a step towards naming the weapon, which is a bad thing as it makes it impossible to melt down.

2. No way to check pregnancies. You can kill the baby to stop the mother from carrying it, though.

3. Not without modding.

4. Shields yes, other armor no. It seems they become attached to things they attack with often.

If you want fewer babies, set the child cap in d_init.txt to something lower. I like using the second, percentage based limit because, if you set it to something like 25%, you will tend not to have all your kids born at the same time, you get more births only as you get more adults.

"Doesn't care" means they've been exposed to lots of death and gore and become jaded. It does prevent tantrums, I believe.

As for the starving dwarf, you do have some doctors with skills enabled? That's what is needed to get anything beyond feeding him. In particular, nothing will happen until he's been diagnosed. As for feeding.. make sure there are no locked doors or burrow designations between him and the food stockpiles.
EDIT: Feeding wounded is a low-priority job. Try creating a "nurse" or two by turning off all labors on the dwarf in question except "feed wounded".

there are lots of dwarves idle whit the feed patient skill enabled he is getting water but no food and my dwarf whit the diagnostician skill is idle they are ignoring him.
