Having Trouble Assigning Bedrooms
« on: April 11, 2012, 05:19:03 pm »

Yeah so this is my 3rd fort and I keep running into this problem. I will sometimes accidentally assign one room to two dwarves and when I assign the room to none and then try to assign it to only one dwarf it just assigns it to both dwarves at again. What do?

Those dwarves are married, you can't assign a bed to just one member of a married couple.

No they aren't because when I assigned the first one it assigned him alone and then later on I forget I already assigned one to that room and assign another. I might be wrong though, where does it say they are married?

Check the relationships section of them. It will be right at the top in red letters. I'm pretty sure that's the only way two dwarves can share an assigned bed. They can start single and then marry, too.

I just designate rooms, and leave the little buggers to assign themselves.

I almost gave a link to facepalm moments

you do NOT need to assign bedrooms. As long as there are bedrooms available ((q)(r)) they'll claim one when they get sleepy. The only ones you need to assign rooms for are your nobles, and a few others, because they want above average places. Otherwise it'll be "damn I'm tired. Hey a bedroom, looks like noone owns it, it's mine now."

Pynreig's right.  If you fill a room with furnature and designate a bedroom from the bed, but then don't assign it to anyone (and don't mark it as a dormitory) the next bedroomless dwarf that uses the bed will claim the room for himself.  That way you don't have to assign rooms to everyone, just make enough rooms and they will claim them as needed.  Furthermore, when a dwarf dies his stuff will get cleared out of the room and it will be automatically available for the next tenant.  Married couples will claim a single bedroom and will use a single bed even if there are multiple beds available in the room.

As a minor note though, if a dwarf claims a bedroom on their own and then later you assign a room to them, like if they're promoted to mayor or something, they'll still keep the old room, so they can collect bedrooms if you're not careful. If you want to remove a dwarf from a bedroom, that does have to be done manually.
