Do vampires have children?
« on: April 08, 2012, 11:35:32 pm »

Do we know if vampires can reproduce yet? Before I turn my entire fort into unliving automatons, I want to know if they will be sterile or dirty, and whether the spawn (if any) are also unliving (and therefore useless as they don't age?)

I'm pretty sure that vampires are sterile.

sterile. Even if you removed that, most are widow(er), would they remarry? And would that wive live long enough to give birth?

Vampires can have children from the time before they got cursed. But once they become vampires they become sterile. And as far as I know dwarves only marry once in their lifetime.

note also that dwarf vampires do not drink alcohol but still require it to be efficient, so after a year or so the vampires will be absurdly slow for lack of alcohol and completely useless for most tasks. Afaik there is no way to speed up an older vampire, you could only create new ones repeatly.

Dwarves don't remarry.

So there can be no increase in fort size without migrants in Vampire Fortress. I'd be modding out Alcohol_Dependent from Dwarves to do this of course.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Does this still happen in the newer version? I had a fort in .07 that was destroyed except for one vampire who I kept around for about a year, and he never seemed to get any slower.

Twilight doesn't have vampires. It has bloodthirsty faeries masquerading as vampires. This is proved by the fact that vampires don't sparkle in sunlight. They either burst into flames, or they don't. Faeries sparkle. They also have illusion magic, which is why you THINK they are vampires.

Never let a teen romance series determine lore on a subject as important as vampires. Its almost like saying raptors aren't a threat because they are only the size of chickens. I'd like to remind you of a creature that is SMALLER than a chicken, but because it hunts in packs, like raptors is equally terrifying.

But I digress. Faeries can be equally terrifying as vampires. But you must learn to see through their machinations.

They do. I have a vampire in a lever room pulling a lever over and over, for years. I have him build and remove a bed in his room, and now it takes him a LOT longer than when he was first placed in the room.

Facehuggers, size of chickens but they implant you with a alien baby that burst out of your chest.
Worst way to die.

In v0.34.07, I watched a vampire pick up a fish and eat it.  I think she fed it to her one year old child.  She immigrated recently, I assume she had the baby with her, and was complaining of her husband being recently deceased.

I've confined her to a burrow outside the security of our underground farms.  She refused to go outside until after the most recently sighted Forgotten Beast was slain.  She went completely insane recently.  I hope the baby survives...

It could be that this isn't the real vampire, but she was part of a squad of marksdwarves and murdered her last victim in the barracks and I have the combat report and 4 eyewitnesses...

Stay tuned!
