being paranoid, does breaching a cavern from above with up/down staircases allow for flying creatures to attack my fortress?

yes.  Luckily its a rather simple matter to dig one square horizontally and build an up-staircase construction in-place there to re-seal your fort.

I learned that the hard way when a forgotten beast flew up my stairs and killed almost everyone in the fort. Good times.

If you've dug a vertical staircase shaft, don't floor over the gap with regular flooring. This will trap your mason down there. Instead, floor it over with an up stair. Then your mason can get back out.

Floor hatches also work well, if you want to preserve the passageway for later, and have the advantage of being immune to BUILDINGDESTROYERs from below. Before I dig deep, I always have my mason mass-produce hatches so that my haulers can swarm and hatch up any opening my miners might create.

thanks for the quick replies :D

i built an up staircase next to it, with a up/down above it that, to the shaft and built a wall over the up/down part

now i'm blocked up while trying to build up an army, no caravan first year with only the first two waves >.>
