Dwarves not moving wagon supplies.
« on: April 09, 2012, 04:25:10 am »

Alrighty, I've only recently started playing DF, so please forgive me if this is a stupid mistake. That being said, I've gotten past this point in the game just fine before so I'm pretty stumped on what's going on. It might be a bug, but I'd love to hear your opinions on it before trying to report it (while quickly perusing bugs I didn't see anything similar)

My Info
Using DF 34.5, mac build, with Mayday's texturepack (also for 34.5) , as well as the latest Mac build of Dwarf Therapist (version 0.6.12b04)

Please note that the issue below has never occurred before with this setup. Also note that I'm using 34.5 and not 34.7 because the latest mac build of Dwarf Therapist currently only works with 34.4 and 34.5

The Problem
I just embarked for a new fortress. The game was set to auto-pause after embarking and so, Trying to be efficient, in the first frame I set up a general stockpile, wood pile, designated trees to be cut, the wagon to be dismantled, etc.

I noticed that sometimes I would see the message 'Dwarf cancels Store Item: ... Job item misplaced' but I didn't think much of it.

It's now a season later and I've moved basically everything underground, except I noticed every once in a while my dwarves would run out when they got a drink. I looked where they were going and lo' and behold many of the goods that were originally on the wagon, which was dismantled long ago, were still in the same spot. Specifically various drinks and some bituminous coal piles.

    The setup:
    • My wagon's contents on z-level -2:
      Spoiler (click to show/hide)
    • My entrance is on z-level 0, going straight down into the ground.
    • The actual entrance hallway of my fortress, with my temporary stockpiles:
      Spoiler (click to show/hide)
After I noticed that no-one was moving the stuff from the (former) wagon, I tried a few things:
    • Since the stuff was mostly food, I tried creating a new food-only stockpile:
      Spoiler (click to show/hide)
    • I tried creating a dump and marking all the stuff to be dumped:
      Spoiler (click to show/hide)
    • I disabled all jobs except hauling and cleaning:
      Spoiler (click to show/hide)
    And yet despite all this:
    • My dwarves are all idle:
      Spoiler (click to show/hide)
    • Hauling the items does not appear on the jobs list
    • And the stuff doesn't even show up on the status page:
      Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In Conclusion
So my question to you all is, what can I do so that my dwarves actually see those barrels and coal bits as being worthy of their attention? I'm just confused because I really didn't do anything unusual, and I haven't messed with forbidding anything yet.

It seems like the error message I get sometimes 'item misplaced' etc. might have something to do with it, but I have no idea how I might fix this.

    Any ideas?

First, thanks for the detailed report.
I'm not sure about the cause of the problem, you have ruled most things out. Still, you could check the following things:

Did you block the path between the fortress entrance and the missing goods (e.g. by removing ramps, building a bridge etc.)?
Do you have any active burrows?
Check your refuse orders with (o) - (r). Do you have "Dwarves gather refuse from outside" enabled? Only then they will dump the goodies.

I hope that helps!

Try d-b-c on them, and bituminous coal is a stone of the economic category.
Drinks would go in food piles.

"Item misplaced" is the message that you get when the wagon comes apart while Dwarves are heading to haul something within it.  They should recover from that after a few moments, and get new hauling jobs assigned.

You need to go to the Stocks tab on the status screen in order to see your inventory.

If any of those barrels outdoors are empty, then you need a furniture stockpile for them.

I've found it unwise and unlucky to disable the wagons until the fortress is securely in place.  It is a meeting zone above ground for grazers and stargazers.  You don't want cave sickness to set in and horses to die of hunger, do ya?

Even in a treeless region, leave the wagon alone.  Until a trade caravan or two has arrived.  Bring wood, instead.  We don't need quivers or anvils.  Ambushers will come with their own.

Also, I found an early wagon dismantle spreads out the goods in an odd way, making them harder to defend from burglars.  Your choose in the end, however.  I try to limit all my hauling in the beginning and middle periods.

That finally did it! I knew there was something obvious I was forgetting =)

I'll probably re-start anyways because due to lack of drink the dwarves have been more unhappy than they should be at this point.

Thanks everyone else for replying as well!
