I find it funny that the magma just sits there and doesn't do anything (unless you make it do something). I think that there should be a random chance that the mountain explodes, spewing hot magma all over your dwarven settlement. To make stuff more FUN, the poisonous gasses could suffocate nearby dwarves as well. Luckily, the dwarves can protect themselves by living in their obsidian "volcano shelter" for a few months (or years).

Also, the volcano could erupt when you are playing in a different region causing a small change to the environment. A region near the erupted volcano, for example, could have a harder time growing crops because the sunlight is blocked by the volcanic smoke.

On the plus side, volcanic ash could be a better fertilizer for certain plants (but could kill other plants).

As a side note to Toady, I understand that implementing a feature like this would probably take a LOT of time, but I think it would be AWESOME if you did.

I've seen it happen, as a bug, when the lava spawns higher than the obsidian.  Trust me.  You don't want that.  0.001 FPS instantaneously.
