Barren caverns
« on: April 05, 2012, 12:07:19 pm »

The caverns in adventure mode seem almost completely devoid of life, which is strange because in fortress mode the caverns are home to many different creatures. My adventurer is beginning to starve, as it has been a very long time since she has seen any creatures at all. Have others had a similar experience, or did I just get a random bad cavern?

It's because of the lowered FOV.

I'd agree with that, but my character is always in sneak mode, so creatures wouldn't have a chance to notice her and flee. There seem to be a few creatures around where a cave entrance joins the caverns, but beyond that I've barely seen anything. A few cave blobs and flesh balls is it, neither of which is edible.

Are you just hanging around the same area or constantly moving in a fairly straight line? Last time I did a cavern crawl, I usually had an encounter with something or other every 1-3 minutes.

Constantly moving. I've been searching for a curious structure, and they take awhile to find with such a limited field of vision. I haven't seen any of the normal cavern dwellers, aside from the cave blobs and flesh balls I mentioned.

My previous adventurer ran half way across the (small)world underground and saw nothing at all(while sneaking) for the whole trip until I finally ran across a curious structure.

Could be low savagery/creature populations from pre-world gen. Also creatures can see you before you see them, they may just be running away.

Did you alter the cavern parameters during world gen?
In the previous version of DF, setting it to have only one cavern layer reliably made the caverns devoid of creatures for me. It also eliminated curious underground structures.

That may have been it, Hylas. I set cavern layers to only two, instead of three. I also took a quick peek with dfhack in fortress mode, and couldn't find a curious structure anywhere. A bit disappointing.
