How do ages work?
« on: April 09, 2012, 09:24:13 pm »

During worldgen, I tend to notice odd ages, "The age of heroes" and "The age of legends" are examples, I understand "The age of Dwarves" or "The Draconic age" but those two on the top, they just confuse me. "The last heroes drew there sword", how does this happen?

generally it's a ratio of historical figures. for instance, if dwarves dominate the world, it will turn into the dwarven age. the human age, etc. the age of legends is ended by the death of significant titans, dragons, or other mythical monsters. the age of heroes is ended when most of the very strong heroes die(?) generally it's simple stuff like that. the age of emptiness when nothing is left alive. that sort of thing.

age of myth, age of legends, age of heroes are all amount of megabeasts related and age of heroes leads into the golden age when they are all dead afaik. Sometimes you get other names based on specific megabeasts or dominating civilizations too but these are the most common^^

In pocket worlds, it's actually common to never see Myth, Legends, or Heroes, since there's typically only one or two megabeasts, titans, or named demons to begin with. Hence you'll see "The Age of Roc and Dragon" or "The Age of [creature name], where the creature is a megabeast, titan, or named demon. Sometimes you'll see "The Age of Three Powers," too.

I actually had a fort once in a world that was in an 'age of [beast] and [beast]'. Both of those beasts decided to visit my fort within the same ~6 month span; I survived, and the next spring I got a message that the world had passed into a new age (golden, iirc). Was pretty cool.

Dying (ceasing to be alive) is also not a Moodable skill. Even totally unskilled Dwarves seem to do it correctly.

Most of this is detailed on the wiki http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Calendar#Ages

The later stages of the world (Death and Emptiness) have been documented in this masterwork thread: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=46033.0
