Yes. Not even veterans are safe on my forts. Oh, you've lived since the beginning of time and lasted through several wars?
Silver spear in your gut.
Shame. Nice knowing yah.

That sounds like the exact opposite of valuing your dwarves. I'm in full support of that.

No need to choose. Shallow flux tends to be filled with more iron then I know what to do with.

Those lucky dwarves, despite the risk of being stabbed, shots, poisoned, eaten, mauled, enslaved, eviscerated or involved in accidents... at least they don’t have to worry about immediate dangers like the heat death of the universe.

Ah but if I didn't check for all the details of my survivors, I never would've spotted this Dwarf's history before his eventual death, truly valuing your Dwarfs.

Ore. Iron is more dwarven than steel anyways.

Or you can use the site finder and select an embark site with flux stone, multiple shallow metals, and multiple deep metals.

Doesn't mean you won't end up with something like gold and galena... but pretty good odds that you'll have both iron and flux.

I have gold + flux, steel isn't hard to come by after 10 years of collecting human/goblin/dwarf crap.

flux.  goblins and caravans both bring iron, often in large quantity, the only way to import flux is in tiny quantities from the caravan.

If you're going to import flux, make sure you vet each of the dwarf civilizations for flux availability. Check under stones in the embark list. If you're lucky you'll find a civ with 4 of the 5 types of flux. If you're REALLY lucky you'll find one with all 5. Since if you request a stone with max priority they will only ever bring 4, this will be the limiting factor on how much steel you can produce. With 3 types of flux available, that's 12 bars of steel per year. Exactly enough to outfit exactly one dwarf in helm, mail + breastplate, greaves, gauntlets, high boots, shield, and weapon. Although you should use something less valuable for the shield like just plain iron.

Flux. Though personally, I embark where there is sand. Ore? Well, so long as I have Zinc or something for my blacksmiths to play with, I'm happy.

Steel is such a pain if you don't have a lot of fuel. No, it's a pain even if you do. In any case, only the most elite gets to wear steel because I frankly can't be bothered. Unless I have modded races that are out to get me. Iron with occasional steel is good enough to take care of goblins, but then again so are traps :P
