Egg Laying Creatures !!SCIENCE!! thread
« on: April 02, 2012, 07:45:25 am »

I would like for this thread to be specifically about egg-laying creatures, not normally on the list of domesticated creatures (i.e. no chickens or turkeys), that can be tamed/domesticated.

I only have two unusual species so far.  Two female ravens and a female kestrel.

Ravens appear to tame quite easily (my animal trainers are nothing special) and seem to produce 4-6 eggs each time they lay eggs.

I got the kestrel off the elven traders, so I'm not sure how hard they really are to tame.  Looks like around 4 eggs each time around so far.

The fort is only on year 2, so I'm not sure what the lifespans of these birds are like.

use the wiki, that should help. Helmet snakes are excellent when trained.

Is the best way to get exotics from the elven traders to actually pay them and treat them nicely? If so I have a lot of habits to change ;)

Perhaps you missed the fact that the wiki is not yet fully updated for DF2012, let alone the latest game version.   ;)

In versions past, I saw people claiming that stealing from the elves made them bring caged animals more, because they have a worse weight to value ratio than dozens of cloth bins.

Yup, it's not up to date. None of this stuff is on here.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

at the risk of stating the obvious, for age and no. of eggs, check the raws:

raven eggs and age

kestrel

I edited the raws for snakes and scorpions and such to lay eggs and am now running my trainers down with a shitload of king cobra hatchlings. I do not want to know what will happen if one reverts to wild. On the plus side, I'm going to be racking up the knowledge on them and thus improving my training.

The snakes that do not lay eggs in the raws are snakes that give birth to live young.  If you're going to add eggs to creatures, you may as well do it to badgers or something, since it makes just as much sense, and you're more likely to run into badgers.

Anyway, for many of the creatures like GDS, GCS, and helmet snakes, they all lack a CHILD token - and that token is the key (aside from "Male" and "Female") to giving birth.  You aren't going to get too far with the multi-generational taming without a child token.

I'm fairly sure all the exotic birds have CHILD tokens, though, although I haven't explicitly checked.

Actually, it appears that king cobra do lay eggs (according to wikipedia).  Is that not in the raws?

Incidentally, real-world scorpions don't lay eggs.  The female scorpion carries the eggs internally until they hatch, and then carries the offspring on her back until they have undergone at least one molt.  So if you're trying for any kind of biological verisimilitude, you should leave scorpions as live-bearers.
