Looking for a gaming keyboard
« on: April 01, 2012, 09:12:56 pm »

I've been looking to upgrade my keyboard, and I've been a bit frustrated.  I really only have three requirements:  1) Lots of macro keys, 2) Support at least 5 simultaneous keypresses, preferably more, and 3) no backlighting on keys or backlighting can be turned off.

I've been surprised at the number of keyboards that don't meet the last two items.  I've run across a number of "gaming keyboards" that don't do anything to support multiple keypresses, which I thought was fairly basic.  3) just appears to be the same trend I've seen in everything else: "It can't be a gaming [insert item here] if it doesn't have cool blue lights on it!"  My computer is in my bedroom, and I'd really prefer not to have yet another glowing object, particularly one that would be hard to block the light from.

Any thoughts?  What keyboards do you guys use?  Any particularly good or bad traits you've found about them?

EDIT: Newegg currently has a refurbished G510 up on sale.  Any 510 owners?

You don't like glowy lights? They're the best part of my new Razer mouse.

I don't terribly mind them until I try to go to sleep and my room is lit up like a Christmas tree...

Well, I'm sort of a Razer fanboy. I'm not sure if you checked there but

The Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Stealth Edition has anti-ghosting for up to six keys, five macro keys, and a bunch of backlight options that I'm 99% sure contain an off option.

I haven't, although I like Razer well enough; I have a Carcharias headset that's been quite nice.

The Blackwidow looks like a bit much to spend for only 5 macro keys, although I see that's because it's mechanical.  I'll look through some of their other keyboards though, some of them look like they're closer to what I'm looking for.

Yeah, I wasn't very thorough with my inspection. They tend to have high quality stuff, but they don't refrain from making it flashy and lighty as well.

I own G510 and its very near, love slider which stops popups from poping in middle of burning fight.
I find keybinds useful although i dont use them much, there are 3 config buttons and 18 keybinds per config you can set to G1-18 Buttons. They are a must if you want to be more efficent in lets say, Starcraft or Warcraft or other strategy games which require fast keybinds.
Also you can change color of glowing or turn it off.
There is volume slider and mute button on keyboard.
To bad i dont care enough to clean it though. But i try to keep it tidy. It looks plain awesome when clean.

Probably thats why they are used with pentagrams on covers of Satanic Black Metal albums.
