Planting sliver barb?

Hi,
I'm on an evil embark, and when I build an aboveground plot, it does not list "sliver barb" as an available crop. Am I doing something wrong here? I wanna make a black dye factory. :(

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but have you actually harvested Silver Barbs with your Herbalists?  And then brewed/milled the plant?
