Flooring over a Volcano
« on: March 31, 2012, 11:30:12 pm »

Has anyone tried building a floor partway or all the way across a volcano just above the magma? Any problems with that approach? Does the magma ever spontaneously rise? Do volcanoes erupt?

Flooring them over and such won't cause any problems, and they only seem to rise on reclaim. something about it moving a magma pit one zlevel up to try and add an eruption feel, but if completly floored over it shouldn't be an issue regardless.

Watch out for magma crabs though. They're fucking deadly snipers.

Correction: You can't build any other constructions on it.

if you want rooms you gotta leave open spaces for the walls to be installed.

Its better just to find it down a bit where u can channel holes in the ground, that wont obstruct other constructions.

I usually dig out magma canals on a lower level, install floodgates, dig out space for forge and furnaces on the z-level above, dig out space on the z-level below, and then flood the canals. But that takes so long, so this time I just started building half way across the volcano and put my forge and furnaces there. I've put up fortifications around the outer edge, but I still have to build a ceiling to prevent attacks from above.

Haven't done any manufacturing yet except a couple serrated glass disks, but I thought I'd check to see if there was something I hadn't anticipated...
