Getting a Dwarf corpse out of a cage

I've run into a bit of a head-scratcher where the corpse of one of my Dwarves somehow got caught in a cage trap.  Now, whether the cage is in the stockpile, or whether I build it, I apparently can't get him out of there.

To make it doubly odd, he actually doesn't show up at all when I build the cage, only when it is returned to the stockpile.

Any advice on how I can get him out of there so I can lay him to rest?

I'm on version 34.06.

did you try linking it to a lever and pulling it?

I think ordering a cage to the trade depot when merchants arrive will bring just the cages and leave the contents.

Well, flipping the connected level just causes the cage to pop into "item form" with the dwarf corpse still inside.  Will try transferring it to the trade depot the next time a caravan rolls through town :)

The problem is that I can't really dump him because he doesn't show up on the cage when it's built, just when it's in "item form" in a stockpile :\

you can dump things when its in item form.
Press k to look. move the cursor over the cage item. press enter to select it, then press enter again to select the item inside and press d to mark the item inside for dumping.

Ah cool, thanks.  Have the corpse assigned to dump now, but not the cage. 

Now let's see if the other dwarves get around to claiming him :)

It appears the above did the trick!   My dwarves took their own sweet time about getting around to dumping the body, but they finally did it just now :)
