Vampire Fortress
« on: March 31, 2012, 08:32:56 am »

Hey forum,

I feel sad for my Dwarfs and wanted to share my sadness with someone. However, given the sillyness of telling my friends or girlfriend about my sadness concerning my fallen dwarfs I figured this would be a better place for my sorrows. Here's the story!

BEWARE, THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS!

I set out to once again try and set up a comfortable place for my dwarves to live. The difference with ussually was that, this time I actually managed too. As my first 7 dwarves were working happily to dig a healthy fortress out of the mountain immigrants arrived. The immigrants brought a suprise: Two vampires. I knew them to be vampires because those two guys were the downfall to my previous fortress were they sucked the blood out of everyone and caused a using tantrum spiral. It was "Nightrule", a clever vampire that got himself to Mayor position in my previous fort by murdering my expedition leader and "Vampire" Mamutsob his right hand. (They still had their nickname's from previous game, which made it easy to spot them.)

As my fortress grew "Nighruler" grew hungry for power again, when my fort was on full steam at about 100 dwarfs he decided it was time to take over the fortress, so he sucked the life out of my expedition leader and claimed the position of mayor. As he prepared to plunge the fortress into a reign of doom a miracle happend. One of my craftdwarfs was possesed and created an artifact that would save the fortress from downfall: "The Honesty-Dominations of Mind". It was a bed of the highest skill, which had a good effect on the mind. The dwarfs put the bed into the Nightruler's chamber, and he couldn't help himself but try and lying in the bed, altough vampire's don't sleep he just wanted to feel the comfort of this well-crafted bed that the dwarven made him.

From that moment on Nightruler only did good, he ordered a mandate to make a slab. Surely he wanted to set straight his bad deeds by creating a memorial to "First-Strike" the Expedition Leader that he slayed. He did more good to the fortress, he confined "Vampire" Mamutsob in his chambers, and one night when Mamutsob dared to venture out seeking blood, he ordered him to be put in a cage! The fortress marveled in riches, and Nightruler climbed the ladder to Count. He had a great tower erected for him and the greatest of throne rooms, with an advanced pump system that made water swirl arround his throne, so that he could speak with his servants in a covering of mysterious mist.

Eventually the great fortress of about 230 dwarfs finally found Adamantine! The Count was so happy that he ordered all excavated, inside the admantine vain they however found a strange cave. It had an eerie fealing over it, so to make no mistakes he ordered the whole militairy of 30 men strong to gaurd the opening while the miners diverted streams of magma and water so that it created a layer of obsidian to seal of the cave.

However Nightruler became curious of what dwelled down there, and eventually he decided that a staircase was to be build down into the cave for it to be explored. His mighty warriors had bested a Forgotten Beast so whatever lurked in these caverns surely shouldn't be a problem for them. He was very wrong tough, as his troops went in they were met by a legion of terryfying demons that utterly crushed every single one of them. They either fell or retreated, with demons on their heels. The dwarfs locked the Nightruler's tower to make sure he was safe. The gate into the earth was still open for the retreating dwarfs to retreat though, with a few Axeman trying to hold the gate for long enough for everyone to make it to safety. Somehow, and I honestly have no idea how because the tower was shut tight (Seriously there was no way out of that thing!) Nightruler got out of his tower and went down their to stand gaurd with his fellow dwarfs against these mighty beasts. He was weilding "Erith Heroicmines" a grand leather shield engraved with images of the mighty artifacts of the fortress, and he used his shield to deflect attack after attack of the demons, giving the dwarfs enough time to get safely behind the gate. Nightruler ordered the gate to be closed with him out, stalling the demons.

And so Nightruler fell :( . However his sacrifise was in vain, the demons burned through the door to slaughter all of mighty Hallshower's, the ammount of blood on the floor is really insane. There are only two dwarfes alive at the moment. "Vampire" Mamotasob in all of the confusion escaped out of his cage and has hidden himself in Nightruler's old office with about 10 demons right outside of his door. The other surviver "Herder" Momuzlektad, leader of the once mighty Rams of Trade has taken refuge in the Rams of Trade barracks, and is doing individual combat training to be ready to die a dwarfworthy dead when the evil demons storm into the Barracks.

Am I the only one that feels more compasion for his dwarfs then that he does when reading a book or watching a movie?

EDIT: Fixed some spelling and some of my terrible punctuation. There's this odd thing I do when writing English where I put commas all over the place.

Very nice story. Often I make the mistake of planning too much and then rage-quitting whenever something doesn't go according to plan.  :-\ I know it's a very bad habit, and your story inspired me to play DF again, the way it was meant to be played.

There are people who feel anything other than contempt for dwarven life? Huh.

Nice story though. Would read again.

I did pretty much no planning at all for this fort. The thing looked pretty ugly but was fun to play. Only problem I had was that I was playing in a good biome with no elves, so there wasn't really any action, except for one time where I decided to close the gate as soon as the Human Caravan entered so I could kill them without them fleeing. They were an offer to Amok to thank him for the "Honest-Domination of Minds".
I read all these stories about sieges on the forum but nothing like that happend at my fortress. To keep the game interesting I started building a big hall with waterfalls and a big tower. Was my first decent game of Dwarf Fortress so I used this fort to test out all the things I could do. Eventually it was getting boring so I decided I should try killing demons. That pretty much went wrong tough, it was not my attention to get Nightruler killed, I was hoping he'd return in my next setlement just like the way he did with this one, but that chance is now gone.

Update on what happend to the fort:
"Herder", the captain of the gaurd decided to charge out of the barracks to avenge his fallen brothers, but he was killed by about 5 demons. "Vampire" Mamotasob, was oblivious to the fact that there were 10 demons outside of his door, and he decided it would be a good time to get something to eat. As soon as he made one step outside of the door the demons applied a fireball to his face. He spent the last moments of his life running arround on fire to finally give into pain on a masterfully engraved floor with an image of "Longbeard", my first Militia Commander, who got killed by "Vampire" Mamotasob.
