Advanced world generation - Single-level/flat caverns?
« on: March 30, 2012, 04:31:14 pm »

Hi.

I was wondering what parameter in the Advanced world generation I need to tweak in order to have completely flat, single-level caverns (if there is one). I've already tried [CAVE_MIN_SIZE] and [CAVE_MAX_SIZE], but those don't affect caverns.

I find hills and sloped terrain to be very hard to orientate. I almost always chose flat embark sites, and I'd love my caverns to be flat too.

Thanks.

You're looking for the cavern settings (namely, openness, passage density, and water levels). You can't directly control their steepness, but if you make them very open, you have more chances to get gentle slopes. Mostly it is random, though. I'm unsure if changing the layer depth for the cavern layers will affect how steep they are, but I don't think it will. The cave size parameters are referencing the aboveground caves that give natural access to the caverns.

I've been messing with the layer depth in the last few worlds (+5 to he first layer parameter), and i HAVE noticed some steep caverns lately... like, 10z no-ramp-cliff kind of steep.

Could this have something to do with overall map wavines? As in, the underground world is a mirror copy in many ways to the surface world, so the caverns could very well have their own flatness value which you cannot see at embark. Theoretically you could choose a flat cavern embark like this, except that you cant see it. If you choose a flatter embark, the caves might also be flatter... much like layer borders are not flat under the surface, but follow the overall curve of it.

Oh well, thanks for the replies. I'll try the options affecting the openness of the caverns and see what happens. Hopefully they should be a little easier to navigate without all the pillars and walls cluttered all over the place.

And yeah Elone, I've noticed that when embarking in steep terrain (mountains) the caverns seem to "wave" accordingly to the overworld terrain.

Put cavern openness at 100 and passage density at 0. Helps a lot.

You won't have a flat cavern but it will be a LOT more manageable than the twisty labyrinths you usually get.
