Archery and unhappy thoughts, 34.07
« on: March 31, 2012, 09:15:36 pm »

I have a problem with my military, specifically my crossbowdwarves.

Despite being in the same uniform as the rest of my military, except for their weapon, my marksmen keep going insane due to no clothing.  I check their inventory before switching them to armor replaces clothing and they're fully armored.  And so is the rest of my military.  And the rest have no problems.  But as soon as I do that my marksmen start going mad.

Is this a bug or is there some other reason for this?

EDIT  See below, looks like this is caused by archery practice somehow.

going mad? like a tantrum?

if so, mabey cause there clothes are rotting and they are unstable befor hand (alreedt unhappy)

if so, just send them to a "happy room" untill they cheer up and then give it to them, if not then might be a glitch

Does this still happen if you set them to only wear their armor over clothing?

It's happened in multiple forts.

I set the armor to replace clothing, since it causes problems when they're sent to a task.  Or used to, don't know if it's been fixed.

I first make sure they have the armor worn, then set it to replace clothing.  They then drop their clothing and continue on.  Except my marksdwarves.  For some reason they think they're naked and soon go mad from it.  None of my other military dwarves have this problem.  I even have them all assigned the same basic armor uniform and assign their weapons (though not specific ones) afterwords.

I think they notice that their upper body is covered, but they always complain about being barefoot and exposed.  They start tantruming and eventually go mad.

No it doesn't happen when I set them to wear it over clothing.  But this only affects my marksdwarves.

My marksdwarf has nothing wrong with a lack of clothes, but probably because I tell him to wear a load of armor and wahtnot

Maybe you should do what I did and manually select your marksdwarves clothing? It'd also help since "metal armor" doesn't specify chainmail AND breastplates at the same time

EDIT: Are you using a differnt uniform orther then Metal Armor? Cause my dwarves are fine since I set it to that

Just looked at an older save, and it might not matter if their armor is worn over clothing.

I have a custom uniform for the armor I choose.  I assign it to all soldiers.  Then I assign them whatever weapon I want that squad to have, though not specific weapons.

All my other soldiers have no problems.  But my marksdwarves start complaining about not having the right clothing.

It MIGHT have something to do with setting them to use archery targets.  I set them to spar until I have the ammunition for them to practice shooting.

Looks like it might not be the clothing.  The game might just show their worst thoughts when they start getting unhappy.

I'm not certain of this, but they might get a bad thought each time they run out of ammo.  And that just keeps getting worse.

They're fine when sparring, but they start having problems when they start archery practice.  They run out of ammo and then get the Soldier (no activity) message.  They eventually start shooting again, but it quickly repeats itself.

I had an older save from right after they started shooting.  I switched them back to sparring and they soon got better.  I switched them to shooting and they quickly got unhappy again.

Maybe try adding shirts, pants, and socks to their uniforms?

hmm, try to make the room very pretty, like engravinf or smothing (or on top) use statues and mechancs, to incress the room value (adding waterfall next to the archer range never hurts) so try anything to keep there happyness up during training then

Their thoughts started going down even when they were wearing their armor over their clothing. That thought was, I believe, when they first changed clothing.

I had the same problem and set them to wear armor over clothing and removed their clothing parts from the armor. They're even layering on their own now, nice job.
