What's up with animal zones?
« on: March 29, 2012, 07:55:03 pm »

I've heard people talking about them as the replacement for the kennel for training war animals,
but I still find using the kennel works just find. I'm pretty sure I'm using the new version, I downloaded the newest lazy newb pack and did not add anything besides vanilla.

The Lazy Newb Pack has not yet been updated for 34.06, where animal training was overhauled. As such, if you're using the Lazy Newb Pack, you will not be able to create animal training zones, and animal training will be done through the kennels instead of through the z-animals screen. If you do wish to upgrade, you will not be able to simply copy everything over; in particular, the Lazy Newb Pack does not include several necessary keybindings needed to utilize the new features.

In short, you're wrong about using the new version. If you want to use the new version, you're going to have to stop being a lazy newb.

In v.34.06, alongside the animal taming changes, the clothing system actually works.

Dwarves wouldn't wear any clothing that they claimed, so after a few years you'd end up with fortresses full of naked dwarves, except for the occasional clothed migrant. The clothes would simply rot right off the backs of your dwarves and there's not much you could do about it.

This could cause some serious havoc with any syndromes that a forgotten beast decided to spread all over your fortress. No shoes and no socks could soon lead to no FEET and worse.

I've got a science thread running, check it out, taming and training.  The OP has a list of facts that are being checked, anyone with science notes should add, and anyone with questions should consult it.
