Waterfalls (mist generator) & babies
« on: April 01, 2012, 07:47:22 am »

Hi guys,

In a previous fort that recently I abandoned, I had a little big problem with waterfalls.

In my 4x4 embark my river froze in winter. Ok, I had built a small dwarven generator that finally worked very well. And connected this with my mist generator wich finally, also worked very nice. In a few time I had all the fortress with good waterfalls-related feelings.

But in those moment I also had many problems related with "dangerous terrain". And many babies appearing in the floor without theirs mothers; these mothers don't took them again, and finally the babies died of angry and thirst.

How I can solve this in future fortress?

The mist generator was had built with:

- Two levels tank's water.
- Over this, three levels of pumping, with one pump to level, all conecting with one tile channel.
- The water of the last pump run in a one tile corridor, falling in one tile hole over the dorfs.
- And this is the dorfs level:
..........................
.........GGG...........
.........GWG..........
.........GGG...........
.........................

The point (.) is the floor, (G) is a floor grate and (W) is a wall built in the level below. The rest of the level below is a open space over the tank's water mentioned previously, and is the same level of the first pump. Important: the water falls exactly over the (W).

Mothers should pick their babies up again after the water washes the baby out of their arms, provided the baby is still somewhere they can reach.  Are the babies being washed into the water tank?  If they're still on the level of the grates, then there might just be too much water on the floor, which is suggested if you're getting 'dangerous terrain' warnings.  IN that case, dig out more floor tiles and place more grates so the water drains faster.

And make sure you can temporarily/periodically shut off the whole thing to let them reclaim the babies

Perhaps modify your design a bit so that there is no horizontally flowing water on the same level as your dwarves. I've utilized natural waterfalls a few times, and I just let the water flow/fall straight through the floor grates. This still provided ample mist to please my dwarves, and they seemed to avoid the two or three tiles with vertically moving water most of the time anyway.

Also, you could place traffic restrictions on the tiles with grates on your original design. There should be plenty of misty space around that area to still give your dwarves pleasant thoughts, and it would keep dwarven mothers from wandering into the flowing water.

Thanks for your responses.

The problem if is the water fall into a one grate, this grate can't empty with enough velocity to not flood the corridor. I solve partially this with a one wall build in the low level that support eight grates in the upper level. But it isn't enough.

I think in reduce the cascade flow with parallel corridor in the upper level (~) water flow, (W all):

                                   WWWWWWWWW
                                   W~1/3 flow?~~~ to waterfall
WWWWWWWWWWWWWW~WWWWWWWW
~~~1/1 flow ~~~~~~~~~~1/3 flow?~~~ to tank's water
WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW~WWWWWWW
                                    W~1/3 flow?~~~  to tank's water
                                    WWWWWWWWW
This can work? And a better question, If I built a waterfall below the dwarfs level, the mist can rise to the dwarfs level through the grates?
it will mess with dwarves if the pump drops a 7/7 block of water on them.  The showers I've built have water collect on top and slowly drain through a diagonal bend.
How can you achieve that the water slowly drain through a diagonal bend?
Whith this design perhaps?
You can create a 100%-safe mist generator with only a small amount of water using the instructions here:
when building this design, build your pumps in reverse order of the direction of pumping. That way, you'll get the most out of your mist.
(This is because, when activated, order of activation is from last item built to first item built)
so you'll want to build:
Code: [Select]
.<1.<2.
8     ^
v     3
.     .
7     ^
v     4
.6>.5>.
or
Code: [Select]
.1>.
^  4
2  v
.<3.
