Butchering a Skeleton

Wiki say in order to use a skeleton i need to "butcher" it. How do i go about doing this, or is the wiki inaccurate?

You build a butcher's workshop, have a dwarf with the Butchery labor active, and (depending on whether you have automatic butchery on or not) let it be butchered or give a butcher order.

If it's the skeleton of a sapient creature, like a goblin or elf, you instead weep at your inability to perform anything meaningful with the skeleton before tossing it into a lava flow.

nope, not sentient, i have a bunch of dead dog and lamb corpses that are rotten or skeletonized and when i queue up a butcher order it cancels saying it needs an un-rotten corpse.

Ah. I probably should've mentioned this, as well: tamed animals must be slaughtered while alive. They cannot be butchered once they have died through other means.

Tame creatures have to be processed via the "slaughter" command.  They cannot be butchered like wild kills.  This is a known source of vexation.

If you animate them in an evil zone, and then kill them (again), your butcher will butcher them.

I'll bet the human traders will pay a lot for a stack of masterfully prepared turkey corpse corpse roasts. Those humans will eat anything!
