Elevators
« on: April 10, 2011, 02:05:48 pm »

I know it would be quite complicated, but imagine it. You have a platform, and a big hole that goes from the highest to the lowest part of your fortress. You put a stockpile on the platform, put food/booze/rocks/whatever on it, then the dwarfs on the level that need all of those things just pull their lever and the elevator comes down (or up) to that level.

Would cut on a lot of time carrying things up and down, and would potentially aid in preventing HFS from invading the fortress.

Well. Pre-1400 elevators were just ropes and pulleys that would carry boulders up to buildings. I would like to see this implemented, it's dwarfy, but this 'modern elevator' idea is just that. To modern for a fantasy environment.

Eh? Why would you want to do that?

Well, it, could be like this:

D = Dwarf pulling rope
/ = Rope
O = Pulley
_ = Elevator floor
M = Wall
T = Rope attached to floor

M   /O/     M
M   /   /    M
M   T D /   M
M________M

Think of it that way, he pulls himself up.

I'm thinking that maybe mechanisms could be used, somehow.
Could, maybe, use one (or more?) mechanism per Z-level the elevator will (intend to) traverse, and levers linked to them to move the elevator platform to the lever's level.

Assuming nothing goes wrong.
But this is Dwarf Fortress.
Everything goes wrong if you hope it doesn't.

Edit: It occurs to me that the way I was envisioning it in my head breaks too many laws of physics to be feasible, but this could still work. Maybe.

I think that it would be more realistic for time period to have a rope and then a big bag/sling that dwarves and items would sit in.

The main problem with this is that currently, dwarves fly really fast up stairs anyway. It should then require a dwarf or a power source at the top and 1 rope, 1 cloth, 1 mechanism and 1 block to make the elevator mechanism and then it goes down as far as you want based on how far you dig down.

Should have guessed that the veterans would have already make such a suggestion...

As far as I can see it, there are three possibilities:
1. A dwarf pulls from a rope out of the elevator and makes it rise or go down.
2. Same as 1, but using a power source, such as a waterwheel. I think this one would be feasible to do with 14th century technology. You would require several mechanisms and ropes, but it is possible.
3. Using floodgates, pressure plates and pumps, you could theoretically create an elevator that works with water. Elevator would have to be made of wood in order for this to work (and wood would have to be able to float on water, too).

Now how do you stop the elevator as a demon stopper?

Now that mine carts and wheelbarrows are going in, it would be nice to throw more ideas regarding a Lift or Elevator around so that ramps aren't the only option to a fortress that heavily utilizes these new toys. Thoughts, ladies and gentlemen?

I think you're raising the wrong thread - this is already a part of the "Mechanisms/Traps Wishlist" thread, which is an ESV winner, and "lifts" are already a part of the devlogs, under the "Improved Mechanics" heading.

It would be better to rez that thread, instead.
