strange moods require stacks of bones?
« on: March 26, 2012, 09:16:02 pm »

i had been wondering about this, so i watched a moody dwarf now, take 21 giant rat bone, 17 giant capybara bone, and 6 giant eagle bone for his mood.

i have to admit that my computer just crashed and corrupted the save file, so i cant see what he's going to make, but this is consistent with what i have been seeing
1 strange mood, and i'm out of bone, regardless of what i had

anyone else been seeing this?

it's quite annoying that the numbers behind bones dont seem to matter, to moods at least, any amount, is just one bone

Yeah that's pretty much how it works unfortunately.

that cant be right? this makes bones so rare i have to keep all i get for moods.
and any bone crafting carries with it a high risk of a failed mood?
or is it only moods that periodically wipe my bone stores?

i'd try to help report on this bug but i have been waiting for the registration email for a few days now.. any clue who i should poke about that btw?

It's not really hard to get bones, start a bunny farm or something.  Hardly a gamebreaking issue because I rarely need bones for anything but moods.

well, it's kind of removing bones as a crafting option, if every other mood results in me suddenly having no bone in the fortress..

dosnt break the whole game sure, but i'd like the option of using the bones i get

If you can't keep up with the bone needs of a few strange moods you either have too many moods or don't kill enough stuff.  I would suggest getting a male and female *animal* and breed them and slaughter them in a small area of your fort.  Never run out again!

Artifacts treat the raw materials as if they were being used as decorations.  When you decorate an object with a raw material, it uses an entire stack at a time.  Bones are just about the only raw material which comes in stacks, so this really only becomes an issue with bones.

They aren't using every part of every bone. I just slaughter animals as a matter of fact when a moody dwarf isn't budging.

i find turkeys are good for this. really, almost any poultry will do ok. but turkeys... man, those things pop out babies like crazy =S

(of course, they're not the absolute best... just the best you can get straight from embark).

It is a known bug #3898: Entire Bone Stacks are used in Reactions instead of a single Bone

To solve: forbid your three smallest stacks of bone. Allow all others to be used in crafting. When a mood hits, forbid all other bone, unforbid three smallest stacks.

Repeat when crafting stacks become small.

This should keep three stacks available for moods, and allow you to use the rest of your bone.

just breed some puppies or kittens or poultry and slaughter stuff when moods happen.
