It's Let's Play time again, and this time we're going back to an old classic! Some of you might remember the aborted LP of the 1994 classic "Hero's Wake". Well this time around we're playing the 2010 Flash remake (screenshot LP only, sorry!) with viewer input. Where will our protagonist go? What will he do? Will he prosper or suffer in the Hero's Wake?
We should begin at the beginning, that is to say the title screen...But before you can begin, you have to answer some questions. I've written out the help screen on races rather than show you all the screens. Are you
male or
female?
What is your
first name?
What is your
last (family) name?
What
race are you? Type 'race' for more information; races are
Nord,
Antian,
Markandi and
Athacan.
NordsThe people of the Northlands are often considered to be rough, brutish and overly concerned with morals, at least by the Antians. The Nordic view is that the Antians are lying, backstabbing weasels who refuse to fight fair. The classic Nordic stance is that the trappings of civilisation so adopted by Antium are just one more way of pulling the wool over your eyes and stealing your purse, although as the world grows more civilised some of the younger generaiton are becoming used to the creature comforts that Antium can provide. At least traditionally, Nords are brought up to be honourable, honest and loyal. They place great emphasis on strength and skills.
Unless dealing with Antians, the shifty bastards.
Antians"When given the opportunity to kill an Antian or a snake, kill the Antian. The snake will only bite you in the front." - Nordic proverb.
Much of the reputation of the Antian (lack of) trustworthiness comes from the rest of the world's experiences with its merchants, taxmen and military. No doubt many of its citizens are not back-stabbing, double-dealing imperialist mercenaries, but the odds are good that outside of the Empire this is what you'll meet. There is however a prevailing cultural dissonance between Nordic and Antian values; where Nords respect strength and honour, Antian culture encourages quick thought, strategy and the acquisition of wealth and status as higher values.
After all, once you reach the top who cares how you got there?
MarkandiAlthough Markand is generally considered to be at the edge of the civilised world, Markandi traders can even be found as distant as the Northlands. Whilst infamous for the ruthlessness of their businessmen and warriors alike, Markandi have a strong reputatoin for keeping their word. Markandi stand somewhere between Nords and Antians in that they place a great deal of emphasis on honour and loyalty, but revere cunning and the acquisition of wealth more than force or the trappings of status.
AthacansWithin the civilised world Athacans are primarily slaves, descended from slaves, escaped slaves or freed slaves. Failing that, they have a reputation for banditry and general ill-behavious and it is the common perception that they are inherently criminal. Athacans from Athaca are generally sighted as traders or mercenaries and trusted only slightly less than their 'civilised' cousins. Athacans typically favour the ideals of strength, cunning and the acquisition of status. Success is generally held to be of greater importance than the means of success.
To prevent this getting moved to LPs again, I'm going to be clear: This is a forum game. Google "Hero's Wake game" and the only result you will get is this thread. I'm just using the 'let's play an old classic' as a framing narrative.
