How do I use Nest Boxes?
« on: March 25, 2012, 04:44:32 pm »

A male and female Raven flew into some Cage traps I had lying around, so I was wondering how I could turn them into a Raven/egg producing factory.

Tame them, build a nest box, b-N it. Make sure they can path to the nest box and that the eggs aren't turned on for cooking or stockpiles. I have no idea if they can actually lay eggs though.

First, you will need to tame them.  Wild animals don't claim nest boxes, so they won't lay eggs.

Make a nest box and built it somewhere out of the way.  I like to build 1x1 rooms sealed off with doors for egg production, but that's not required.  Make a pasture zone over the nest box.  Once the female is tame, assign her to the nest box, and she'll lay eggs.

If all you want are eggs, you don't need the male.  If you want to breed them, you'll need to have the male pastured or chained somewhere safe.  He doesn't have to be anywhere near the female to fertilize the eggs.  You'll also need to prevent the dwarves from cooking or stockpiling the eggs.  I usually do this by locking the door to the nest box room, but you can also forbid the eggs or disable cooking and stockpiling of eggs.
