Efficient Military?
« on: March 25, 2012, 12:33:12 pm »

As of the latest update, what's the best way to get your squads highly trained. I've heard groups of three. So should I squad three individuals and set schedule for two to train? I have goblins that started siege early and I've lost quite a few dwarves. I have a good passive defense - ramps down to my fortress are blocked with marble/artifact wall grates with a switch followed by a bridge and a large drop under it. I plan on building a maze with traps that will lead directly to my barracks but I need to get my active defense more prepared. Any suggestions?

I use squads of 2 to 4 with the number training left at the default 10. I usually get Legendary in about 12 months, I think that is pretty "efficient."

Danger room is even more "efficient." :)

What personality traits should I look for soldiers and, more importantly, my commander?

Not having a lot of friends. :)

One other tip, I prefer to train them with no uniform so they learn fighting, dodging, and wresting. Once they are up to Adequate in fighting, then I give them a training weapon to start learning weapon skills.

Also, for the early years of the fortress, you may find archers preferable to melee fighters. Archers can shoot the enemy from behind fortifications, much less risk than charging into fisticuffs.

Avoid the training weapons, actually. They're useless in a fight, and if a dwarf happens to get attached to it, good luck getting rid of it. Normal weapons carry no(or possibly very, very, little. As in, less than a danger room) risk of sparring injury that was 50% of the reason for using wrestledwarves in 40d versions. The other 50% was being able to snap a dragon's neck with ease.

... Yes, the hugs are for everyone.  No stabbing, though.  Just hugs.

Are you sure that dwarfs get attached to training weapons? I thought the whole point of training weapons is precisely that, to get training started while you are building your steel smithing industry.

The other reason I like training weapons is that it stops the dance of weaponsmith forges a steel sword, soldier 1 stops training to pick up the sword, soldier 2 runs to get soldier 1's discarded bronze sword, soldier 3 runs to get soldier 2's discarded copper sword...

It has nothing to do with preventing injury, really.

Make sure all your military dwarves have lots of friends and family. Also, make sure to give their friends and family dangerous jobs.
