Is it possible to make central butchery?
« on: March 26, 2012, 08:55:28 am »

I want to make one central butchery to process wildlife killed by dogs on the entire map.  Unfortunately:
*Butchery can process only nearby corpses (why? it is infuriating and I see no good reason for this)
*And it is impossible to create stockpile with only unrotten corpses

So - is it possible to do this (AFAIK no)?

I find that butchers shops are best left alone. If you start hauling corpses to stockpiles for butchering then it causes confusion, the corpse is no longer available because someone is busy hauling it.

The same thing applies for tanners. I don't generally have a stockpile for raw hide because otherwise it causes job cancellation.

Just leave your butchers to it and hope for the best. Also bear in mind that some wild animals are too small to be butchered, and even if you have their corpses lying around you'll get a job cancellation due to no corpses.

I put a butcher shop and a tanner right next to my refuse pile as that seems to be the most efficient method in my experience. KodKod is right, however, that the hauling job tends to delay the butchering job.

Depends on what you're doing.  If you've got modded ethics and defense mod, then you're going to be drowning in butcherable parts.  In that case, your dwarves hauling 2% of the corpses at any given time, won't matter.

I usually end up with a large chunk of surface land covered in a refuse pile and butcher shops in the middle or to the side of it.  Everything goes in, the legitimate refuse is left to evaporate, and the corpses are processed as they're able.  Importantly, a tanner section is put somewhere else (usually on the level below) with fresh skin stockpiles available, though obviously not as large as the butcher pile.
