Also im having trouble finding out how to tame the dragon.  I changed the raw data for dragons in creature standard folder to pet instead of petexotic and its still not showing up.  Also is taming and then training a war dragon a bad idea because of all the things it will constantly set on fire?

add the [TRAINABLE] Tag

as for legends.  Save your fort.  Copy your save folder with a new name.  Abandon, then look at legends.

The [TRAINABLE] tag is only for if you want a war dragon or hunting dragon. Switching PET_EXOTIC for PET is enough to tame it. More likely you simply changed the main raws instead of those within the save file. The ones within the save file (in your data/save/whatever region file it is) are what determine the properties of things within that world; the main ones are just copied for new worlds.

You can't start a new game on a world without first abandoning the current game, but as slothen suggests making a copy and doing it there works fine.

Dragons can be quite dangerous, even on your team, but if you take care to keep it away from flammable things that you don't want burned, they can be quite useful. Setting them behind fortifications in a small alcove in your entry hallway that can have sight cut off and then opening it up whenever hostiles without any ranged attack try to come through, for instance, will usually result in crispy-fried goblins.

so just partnering the dragon up with a swordsdwarf is a bad idea?  I know he can set buildings on fire but will it hurt my militia just out in an open field?

The general conclusion is that having dragons as pets is only a good idea if dwarfs are fireproof. What happens is that your dragon will walk behind your swordsdwarf and his team mates. Upon encountering goblins, the dragon breathes fire, making crispy goblins. And crispy swordsdwarf & friends as collateral damage. Oh, and set fire to the map, resulting in fps death.

Also, dragonfire is hotter than anything, including magma. A magmasafe bridge will be burned away.

And as mentioned, you need to change the raws before you generate the world or go into the savegame raws. But I found that dragon and plump helmet roast is better than dragon roasting goblins.

If you're using .05 or earlier, you should not have to regen the world to make a captured dragon trainable.  Adding the pet tag should be enough.  Also, make sure you're changing the raws within the save game folder, not the regular ones.
