Did I just kill a Vamp?
« on: March 27, 2012, 09:40:45 am »

Ok, so in my fort, I got some new Dwarvs, and ut them together into a milita.
A Cave worm was terrorizing the Dwarfs down below, and I sent the squad down.

Random Dwarf Mc Archer got struct down and I think 'Ho Hum, he just got here, no big deal."
Then, Then I notice what he left behind, over 5 pages of "BONE CROWN" items..

Now, I heard that vamps will make items out of their victims, but those are random items. And usually from sapiants like Elves or Dwarves.

These were all random animals, and mostly Giant animals.

Giant Olm, Giant Rat, Giant Panther, Wombat, Yak, etc. And they are ALL Crowns. no other items at all.

WTF?

+1 to paranoia.  The scorecard isn't looking good, at this rate we'll never catch up!

Intelligent creatures will take trophies of their significant kills.  Vampires kill intelligent beings.  Are any of those items made from intelligent beings?  No?  Then it must not be any intelligent kills, hmm?

It's a soldier, not a vampire.

Dr. McCoy in Dwarf Fortress:

I'm a cheesemaker, not a soldier!

I'm a noble, not a lever-puller!

I'm a miner, not an architect!

So how high are we on the count now? It seems like we get one of these "OMG THEY HAVE JEWELRY THEY ARE VAMPIRE?" threads every day.

Lets just say this.

When was the last time you saw a random immagant dwarf that came with ANYTHING other then basic clothes?

Here is the annoying part, I don't really know where it came from I didn't check every dwarf...
All I know is all of a suddenly I find a pile of clothes and 4 pages of Bone Crown items.
They are all animal bones, no people bones :P

in 34.06, I usually get one or two former soldiers/hunters in each wave, dropping a few trophies at the map edge and carrying the rest onward. Since I modded dwarfs to make trophies from sentients, elf bone earings are no warning either. Only if I see dwarf bone amulets am I allarmed. And a dwarf vamp would have started in a dwarf civ in any case, well, usually, so would always have a few of those.

10:1? He's just a badass hunter. When a dwarf "travels the wilds to hunt great beasts" they either die immediately or leave a trail of slaughter in their wake making a ridiculous number of trinkets from their kills. Jewelery is only an indicator if it's made of sapient parts. A much more reliable way to tell is to look at their Civ relationships. If they're a "former member" of a dozen civs then it's because they were chased out with torches and pitchforks.

Badass hunter IS The right answer!

Able to look up exactly who owned the items and it's a Hammer Dwarf he just came in with over 250 Kills!
All wild animals (A lot of animal men).  Also ONE notable kill, a "gloom Brute wife"

So KICK ASS on getting awesome people settling in the new version!
