SHELL ARMOR. HOW DOES IT WORK???
« on: March 21, 2012, 12:03:57 am »

I cannot find anything on the real effectiveness of shell armor. Everything I find effectively says "Yes. It exists". How is it in relation to, say, iron armor? Obviously less, but how so? Will it protect from animal attacks? I have SO MUCH TURTLE. Please help.

I would assume it to be better than leather, but worse than any metal armor.
Try it and find out.

It will provide very little protection against anything stronger then a medium cavern creature.  Invaders will occasionally punch kick or bite your soldiers and it might help some when that happens.

Shell is identical to bone in terms of strength and weight. Better than leather and wood, but worse than any metal.

I just had an image of dwarves going into battle clad in turtle shell breastplates. TMND?

Shell armour does not hold against giant badgers. So I'd say it's better than nothing, worse than anything.

Nothing survives the badgers.

Giant badgers are not a very good criterion for that though; giant badgers are nasty.

I made a thread about bone and shell armour once. There's not a lot of data to go around and the conclusion was the same there. It's better than wearing no armour but any other armour is better.

Although I'm not too sure about leather.
