Yes, but that's one of the fighting tactics of this type of game. It's using player skill to take less damage, allowing you to spend less time healing and take on tougher monsters than your dudes can handle normally. And there are enemies that exploit movement like crabs and enemies that reach through bars like slimes and enemies that fire missiles and spells. 

That said, I hate having to do the gate trick to kill a monster.

This was probably what led me to enjoy it less. The game is in many ways a straight port of Dungeon Master 1&2, both of which had more mechanical depth to equipment, characters, survival and even monsters. If you really enjoyed your LoG experience, I encourage you to grab Dosbox and go try Dungeon Master 2. The graphics may be dated but to me it's an infinitely more enjoyable experience, from character creation to actually finishing the game.

I enjoyed Grimrock, moreso because I got it as part of a Humble Bundle.  The editor really sets the deal, as with what you can potentially do with it you can make some amazing mods (and I did play one as well with a fully custom tileset, and some neat effects, that was well done).  The 2d interface modding thing looks like it could be used for all sorts of neat things as well.

Of course, someone would have to take said modding tool and go nuts and they could probably straight up recreate Dungeon Master 1/2, and then it really would be a port of sorts (there may be some limits of course, but the mod toolkit was pretty robust).

Am I the only one who thought Dungeon Master 2 was terribly hard? (Or maybe I was not as skilled as a kid.) Basically I spend the whole game running away from monsters.

Dinosaurs: The toughest enemy in the game? Better run away!
Whirlwinds: Not harmable with normal weapons? Better run away!
Wolfes: Calls the whole pack for support once he takes damage? Better run away!
Kobold-Thief: He steals my weapons OUT OF MY HANDS? Better run away!

It was fun though. ^^

Unlike DM1, DM2 is a game you can farm and grind in until you're strong enough. I think DM1 was significantly harder. On the other hand, that may be why some people prefer DM1. DM2 kind of? requires some early game grinding to get your spellcasters high enough that they can crank out good healing and mana potions, and dispel incorporeal enemies.

Not to mention farming the giants lets you rake in 2 to 3 green gems at a time.

With a spoiler walkthrough, just about any dungeoneering game with puzzles can be done in a few hours. Especially if you run past everything to grab the key items.

You also lose the joy of solving puzzles, overcoming difficulty. It's like a mystery: if you know the answer, all you can enjoy is how well the writer put the story together.
