I prefer artifact spears over axes. Spearlords have a tendancy to hack more limbs off than their axelord counterparts ;o

Are you sure they're not just cutting off individual fingers and toes as opposed to an axelord's flying arms and heads?

...have to do it throughly and take a good look at the details. Just saying "iron morningstars beat adamantine swords in npc vs. npc combat" doesn't tell the whole story.

No, the thread in the adventure mode forum I mentioned tells the story. An interested person might have gone there and typed morningstar into the search box. This was a case of iron armor mass combat tests. Thank you for your effort to enlighten the unaware, but if the next question is "how many fighters"... what would be the point of lengthily stating the already discussed or obvious?

It is said knowledge is like a foul-smelling herb. It must be cooked well and thoroughly with experience to make it palatable. A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.

I think if your dwarf has a preference for Hammers, He'll most likely make that type. Savscum for Different materials like silver or more value.

Are you talking about this thread?  The tests performed in that thread were definitely arena tests on fully armored fighters, and khearn's warning is totally appropriate.  But I'm glad that you've had good anecdotal experiences with morningstars in addition to the experimental results.

*Sauce, Axelord and Spearlord fighting a bronze colossi, Axelord frequently dents and chips colossi, spearlord was the one that scored the arm, leg and head ripping hits.

But when fighting, say, goblins, a steel axe is far more likely to lop off limbs and appendages left and right than a spear of equal quality and skill.

Not that the speardwarf won't give it a jolly good effort though.

Or maybe my speardwarf was slightly more focused/less sadistic in combat than my axedwarf. Nah that isn't it either. Speardwarf liked to stab legs and twist the spear.

For fighting goblins, kobolds and monkeys you'll want an axedwarf. For fighting things like (blind cave) ogres a spear is better. Limbs aren't likely to fly with those bastards anyway and the spear can reach organs much better.

Theoretically speaking, a halberd should be the perfect combination of reach, penetration and limb-lopiness.

As I said, spears will take down your megabeasts, axes will take down your sieges and whatnot.  Spears are titan-slayers in every sense.
