Dwarf Children/Clothing workaround
« on: May 23, 2012, 08:32:18 pm »

Hey all!

Is there any way to mod dwarf fortress so that dwarf children don't get negative thoughts from being naked all the time? I think it's in entity_default or whatever but I'm really kind of stuck.

Yeah, update to a version where that bug has been fixed.  Anything from 0.34.07 onward should do.

Dwarf children still get negative thoughts from not having clothes.  See bug #5748: Children Still Tantruming/Going Berserk at Age 2 Over Clothing

I think Toady meant that he "removed negative clothing thoughts for babies" but he accidentally wrote "children" instead in the bugfix description.

I'd just make sure that you start a clothing industry up around the time your dwarves start popping out the little tyrants, and you should be fine as long as you are producing footwear, upper-body, and lower-body covering clothes.

Really?  I haven't seen any bad thoughts on my naked kids.

If they stay non-tantruming long enough to reach clothes, it's not an issue. Good thought sources* other that food, drink, dining hall, bedroom and work would be required to increase a baby's happyness so it doesn't plummet into miserable the moment he realizes he's a naked child.

*stuff they can admire, placed in frequented parts of the fortress.

It would be an odd mistake for the designer of the game to make, who of all people ought to know the difference between babies and children.  However, if it was a mistake, he could easily "fix" the bug report with an erratum to the release notes for that version.

Okay now I'm confused.  No bad thoughts, no bad thoughts, upgrade from .09 to .1, play a bit, kid goes insane... bad thoughts RE: clothing.  It's not as if my clothing situation has changed much... I don't get it.  it being fixed for '.08 and '.09 and screwed up again for '.1 seems unlikely.

It may just be that as the baby becomes a child it picks up all its clothes. All the clothes wear off at the same time which results in a massive unhappiness spike if it hasnt picked anything new up. I had it happen a couple of times. They usually do not even recover faster enough from the bad thoughts and just stand somewhere, not getting any other good thoughts or food/booze. As soon as a kid goes stark clothing mad, I wall it in somewhere.

I let her wander.  Stark raving mad is safe, my mayor has a coffin fetish, and I might as well put some of 'em to use.

As soon as my dwarven babies grow up into children, the very first thing they do is grab clothing ("Pickup Equipment") and wear it.

I suspect there might still be a bug with respect to immigrant children who arrive at 4 years old (or whatever) but are still labelled "baby" until they have a birthday while in the fortress.  I don't recall whether such baby-children arrive with clothing or not, so maybe those ones get the bad thoughts....  I'll have to try to pay closer attention.

Children born in the fortress also get this 'What's this? I'm naked!' bad thought spike when they fail to pick up new clothes in time after their first set (picked up after becoming a child) starts to wear out all at the same time.
Again, that is just an assumption, but seems plausable.

Well, back in v0.34.07, where it was supposedly fixed, I had a child that didn't have a shirt that was getting bad thoughts from that.  The only reason why though was that I didn't have any spare shirts for her to pick up (I'd just run out of shirts when she became a child, and other dwarves kept claiming them first after I started making more).  I mainly remember this because I was amused that her description also mentioned that she was "immodest".  Even the current bug report I linked to above points out that children still had bad thoughts from not wearing clothing in v0.34.07.

I'm speculating a bit here, but I think the pre-.07 problem was that babies were getting bad thoughts from not having clothing and being unable to get them, and the bad thoughts would sometimes drive them over the edge about the same time they became children.  Toady's bugfix prevented the bad thoughts on babies (not children), thus allowing children much more time to go and clothe themselves before going mad.

I agree that we'll probably need "word of God" to find out if that's what he really meant though.
