Anti-freeze
« on: March 18, 2012, 04:01:00 am »

hey guys, yet another question from me.....

How can I make a water source for my dwarves that WONT freeze? All I have are murky pools, so I decided to use a screw pump into another reservoir, and build a well, so that my water source is clean... but it freezes in the winter, leaving me with no water for my dwarves to drink... if i build a floor, will this stop that, or do i need to try something more?

If it ever was exposed to sunlight it will always be outside, so you have to build it completely inside.
Anyway, booze is always better.

Except for the wounded, or those covered in icky goo falling from the sky.

Flowing magma underneath the water will keep it liquid even in winter, which is of course the most !!Fun!! method.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, isn't flowing magma also a source of FPS loss due to constant temperature recalculations?

I usually just go for an underground cistern that feeds a smaller well. Gotta prepare for the large scale waterworks even when you're just digging that first hole.

ok... so will this logic work...

I've got my water source pumped into an area that is a further level below the normal. If i then create another pit from there, without exposing it to the surface, I can pump the water into it and use it as a well?

This wont happen till the stupid seige ends... trying to lure the goblins through my traps, then block off their path before they get in and wreak havoc... and the dwarves, forever useful with their time, decided to throw a party... "HEY EVERYONE!!! we're under seige... time to party!!!"

It's easy to end the party -- just un-designate the table.  That stops the party -- even if you re-designate it as a dining room/meeting place without unpausing.

If the water pit is already frozen, probably the easiest thing to do is to tunnel all the way to the water and when it unfreezes, it will drain right into your new cistern.  Be sure to put up fortifications to keep outsiders out!  (though they can still be pushed through by the flow, they won't path through it).  Heck, if it's not frozen, you can still do it, it just might be a little rough on the dwarf who digs out that last tile (though they can usually get away).

any space exposed to the sky ever will forever freeze when it is cold. any space never exposed to the sky will not.

so for example: a pit dug straight to hell and filled with rock floors will still be outside: grass will grow, water will freeze in winter.

conversely if you cut away all of a mountain except the single topmost tile, held up by a tiny support, everything beneath the tile, surrounded by sunshine and grass as it might be, will still count as underground/dark.  in other words, just digging down into soil will expose it to air/freezing/sun but down one tile and over one tile and you're in a dark underground space that will not freeze.

a reservoir suddenly exposed to the surface, will freeze only where exposed.  This can be used to make interesting freezing death traps
