I think I have narrowed down the issue. As normally dodging into grass/pebbles should not be lethal to this extent, I believe the poor sod was cursed by his own weapon.

My theory is that Rootlessen thinks 111 kills are enough per owner.

As shown in the second image, the Giant Thrips simply threw the Marksdwarf with enough force to explode him on impact, similar to if the dwarf jumped off a high cliff.

Are Giant Thrips capable of transferring such force through a second toe on one's right foot?

And, if that is simply a quirk of the game engine, would weight of the thrown dwarf in this case work with or against him? As this marksdwarf was fully  prepared for some close combat;

Size is the most important thing in wrestling, then strength. Where the aggressor grabbed to wrestle is mostly irrelevant for Throw or Take Down. Giant Thrips are giant. Therefore, they are capable of throwing a dwarf hard enough to dismember him. Mind, it's actually very rare for the combat AI to decide to do a throw so you had some exceptional luck with the dice (calling it 'good' or 'bad' luck is up to you).

Actually, when size difference is big, the AI quite often throws. In adventure mode I trained some wrestling on a rabbit by auto fighting, not called shots. I kept trying to find it again every time I threw it and it didn't hit a tree.

I haven't noticed throwing in a long while, tbh, except just an hour ago when a huge three-eyed toad threw a war dog at its trainer.

Giant insects are much more "giant" compared to their base creature than most other giants.  They have a size multiplier of twenty million percent.  Of course, with a starting size of 1, that still only leaves it with a size of 200,000, but that's still a creature that's over three times the size of your dwarf, and is nearly the size of a friggin' tiger.   

Considering the way in which creatures are built with copy-pasted parts so often, you should consider it like being pounced upon by a tiger when you see a giant insect.

Consider also that my first death in the new version of the game involved being "surprised" by the combat effectiveness of a giant tick's bite - it cleaved my arm straight out of the socket in the first round I moved into range with it! 

Moral of the story: giant creatures, no matter how harmless the base creature, don't screw around, yo.  Just search for the stories of whole dwarven squads getting wiped out by invincible giant sponges.

This information has given me newfound respect for the giant dingos my current world appears infested with. I've had no trouble with them because military/adventurers have been extremely skilled before encountering them, but still.

Giant Kea. Made me shudder. I was happy my random modding made giant creatures available on embark. Giant dingos are indeed valuable.
